For very lean meat, I've found that it's easier to select the meat and ask the butcher to grind it. My cuisinart is stored in the basement along with other PITA utensils.

I don't eat commercially prepared ground meats.
Don't eat Hamburgers...patties always have grit & grizzle in them.
Grind my own using my foodprocessor, works great.
After reading "Deadly Feasts" by ?David? Rhodes I'd never go back to eating 'burgers or ground meat. Fascinating book that was.

I tried that 30 years or so ago. ONCE.. lol way too much work for so little cost savings.

Now if you are interested in preparing your own recipe for sausage, it will work great and be well worth the extra effort.

My suggestion would be to borrow a cuisinart from a friend and try it first. Then after you've completed the process and if you think it's worth it, invest the money in a cuisinart for yourself.

As our meat comes from our own livestock, we grind our own. We use an old Chop-Rite grinder which is still made. Universal is also a good brand, and I think they cost less than Chop-Rites. If you can find a Corona with all the attachments in a 2nd hand store, it'll serve you well.I've tried using a food processor, with less than good results. I ended up with really fine pate' type meat, interspersed with chunks of unchopped stuff. You need a meat grinder. Here's the Chop-Rite

Don't get me going, Helen! ... too late!

Don't eat meat, stopwhining...please do yourself a favour and only serve it to your enemies, or people that you dislike. I know it smells great on the bbq and a roasted chicken tastes yummy, but it's a time-bomb with effects that don't show themselves until it's too late. Please reconsider...

Protein? Do you know how many innoculations an animal goes through before it gets to the supermarket? Do any of these medications get into a persons blood stream? Do they build up? Can they affect available protein? If so, can they affect proteins in our own bodies? What about cholesterol? You can only get added cholesterol from animal fat. You can be an athlete and still die from blocked arteries, so protein should be the last concern, imo.

P.S. Sorry stopwhining! My rant got out of control slightly!

My family was dairy farmers. They got out when other farmers started using too many antibiotics and growth hormones. It was causing too many problems (mastitis sp??) which then would be corrected with more drugs.

For iron, have a Guiness! Low alcohol content, very filling, high iron.

My mom used to have to fight with me to eat meat. I still appreciate the occasional filet cooked rare though!

commercial beef is nasty...I won't touch it...get organic..it's available almost everywhere...next to goat and lamb, I love good beef...edited to add, clivebarkerfan: Guinness is proof of the existence of God

Personally I love Buffalo but in recent years I have noticed that it is becoming more and more tastless as it becomes a more popular choice.

store ground meat-the problem is that the same grinder has been used to ground some other people's meat and you may not want that.
