I'm going to have to buy a new mattress soon. I keep seeing those ads about the Temper Pedic (sp?) ones made of foam. Does anyone here have one of those? Any suggestions? Is your mattress working for you?

Tempur Pedic's are very nice, we still have one that was my mother's. Seems they last a long time. If I were you though, I'd do a search under "memory foam matresses" because there are other brands now with the same foam, some for quite a bit less. You'll pay triple the cost of an expensive inner spring mattress. I only sleep in 1-2 hour spurts no matter where or on what kind of bed I am, but my wife loves the memory foam mattress.

Not to get to personal and am not looking for too much info, but wonder how they are for activities that are not sleeping?

yall are hilarious tonight! it's nice to see a light-hearted thread for a change
KD - I just got a new Sealy Posturpedic - extra firm - and love it! I know it's not what you were asking about, just thought I would throw my two cents worth in

wgm, that's what everyone tells me to get - a good Sealy Posturpedic, but those commercials where everyone sinks into the foam mattress and you actually wake up looking younger, appeals to me for some reason.

KD - it is a very good mattress! My previous mattress was one also, and I was so used to it; we lost our home in a fire on Memorial Day, and while waiting for the insurance (which takes forever!!), had to live in a hotel for 10 days then in a rental house til a week ago...and the mattresses were horrible! I woke up every morning aching all over! I should do a commercial LOL
Speaking of commercials, I know what you mean! That would be wonderful - but we can pretend, can't we?

For as long as I can remember, even as a teenager. I get up on average 4 times a night, and I'm finished and up for good by 5 at the very latest. I guess it's partly conditioning. A lot can happen here at night, and there really has to be a certain level of constant awareness to the sounds of the animals outside. From about age 6, I was sent outside to check on why the dogs were barking, why the rooster was crowing, why the horses or sheep were restless. My girls are the same kind of sleepers now, even though they don't live at home anymore. When they come home to visit, we'll often bump into each other, up at the same time in the middle of the night. My son is a hard sleeper though, nothing wakes him up. Sleep is a funny thing. Sometimes I envy my wife, who can remain out, in the same position, for 8 solid hours, other times I resent the time I've wasted during the few hours I DO actually sleep...

I really appreciate your advice, wgm. I want to narrow it down so I don't look like a complete dork trying every bed in the showroom.
That's amazing, Prof. Have you ever slept a full night?? I'm surprised you're not psychotic with that kind of sleeping pattern, although... nevermind.
Linda, I'm not sure if you can trust commercials, but on these foam mattresses, not only do you wake up looking younger, but you also wake up with make-up on and perfect hair. Can a Sealy or Simmons do that?

If you're on a budget and want an adjustable air bed there are some out there for a few hundred bucks. The whole mattress adjusts not each half like the super expensive ones.

I can't remember the last time I slept a full night through either. It was probably 24 years ago before my daughter was born. I usually sleep for maybe three hours then I'm up and about for under 5 minutes and back to sleep again. Then up again to use the bathroom, then back to sleep again. I've gotten very good at maneuvering in the dark! I envy those who can sleep straight throught the night!

I've been curious about those mattresses as well. I also like the ones that you where you can adjust the firmness on each side. I tend to like to "sink" into the mattress where my boyfriend needs firm for his back. I can't stand to sleep on something rock hard. Okay, let's keep it clean.

We bought a "Select Comfort" last month and it is GREAT.
Each side can select the firmness of the mattress from super firm to really soft by remote control.
I keep mine set at 35 and it feels like I am sleeping on a cloud
By using the other control, you can raise/lower the head part and also the leg part. That's great for reading in bed.
It was expensive but we figured it is worth every dollar.
We were both having trouble sleeping at night and waking up feeling like we were beat up or something, now it's ahhhh!

I got one of the foam mattresses last February and LOVE it!! No pressure spots, very comfortable. And to make things even better, about a month ago I found one of those motorized beds that can be put into different positions at a garage sale for $40 Censorship, like charity, should begin at home; but unlike charity, it should end there --Clare Booth Luce
