Over the weekend, I was reading some newspapers that I had sitting around for about a week, that I needed to catch up on.
There was an article that mentioned that there was a congressman who suggested to Presidents Johnson and Nixon to get out of Vietnam.
Now, apparently according to this article, there is a man (or more) that are telling Bush to get out of Iraq.
What do you think?
I am on the fence. I don't want it to get to be Vietnam. So I would support the effort to pull out.
However, on the other hand I can see that this is not the 60s and that we do need to take action against the terrorism.
Vietnam was "over there." We didn't have terrorism concerns from the Cong here in the states. Now we do have the concerns from the terrorists here in our own backyard.
It is different. The times are different. The situation (world and nationally) is different.
Or maybe that is the fear spin that Michael Moore talks about in his "Bowling for Colubine"?
Another thing, is that we could use the money to re-build their country, here in our country.

Hi clarksville! I don't know if there are any Viet Nam vets here, but I'd like to know what one of them thinks of the Iraqi war. Any vets here?

Over the weekend I worked a political booth at a local arts festival and had the opportunity to talk to a couple of Vietnam War veterans. My guess is that there are mixed feelings among them. The two that I talked to do not think we belong in Iraq and have dubbed it Vietnam Part II. They are very upset over the whole thing. They did have a good point in saying that at least the soldiers over there will come home to a hero's welcome where they did not. The circumstances of both wars bear striking similarities. An article on that very issue can be found here:
When not grounded on America's democratic ideals, patriotism becomes a mask for militarism and a tool for oppression.
