Looks like eBay, Craigslist (part owned by eBay) and other sites are fighting this legislation tooth and nail.
As I pasted that link I just heard that Wiki is going to shut down for a day in order to promote their agenda against this legislation.
Personally, I think websites like eBay, Craigslist, Amazon, etc have all neglected their responsibilities to consumers by allowing an insane amount of fraudulent merchandise on their site.
So, what happens if eBay shuts down for a day to bring attention to this legislation? What if the Feds shut it down altogether if these laws are passed?
One one hand, it would be nice to see eBay and Amazon get a taste of their own medicine for acting so irresponsible. Same goes for Alibaba.
On the other hand, this legislation would shut down small businesses that utilizes these services. I suggest anyone selling on any of these sites legitimately start looking at developing their own websites sooner than later.
I doubt this will pass, but hopefully it is a threat that these companies start to take seriously. Of course, it means stronger enforcement, which means more fees to cover those costs.
Again, this is a perfect example of Corporate greed. Funny how certain people attacked the Occupy movement for protesting and causing disruptions. How many of those people will think the same when these corporations do the same?
These actions by Wiki and Reddit and possibly other companies prove my point. We don't have to worry so much about government control, we have to worry about corporate control of our daily lives. The government is founded by the people... we need to keep it that way and prevent corporations from intruding on us. If these corporations want to play games with peoples lives because they have lost control of keeping things legal, then we need to walk away from them and say no thank you. Let them figure out how to survive when they are shut down.
