Morons.
My item numbers stopped being 320xxxxxxxxx a few days ago and went to 220xxxxxxxxx. Okay, they moved me to a new server or started a new sequence, whatever. I was okay with it.
But now I'm getting random item numbers and I am NOT okay with it. Now they're either 220xxxxxxxxx or 360xxxxxxxxx. Obviously this plays havoc with organizing auction items. I'm going to have a devil of a time finding the right ones.
I guess the idiots who tried this last time have since gone on to other jobs, probably at Starbucks. Now we've got a new bunch of idiots to train.

Fluffy - Sellers posting on the Stores board report number block changes from time to time. I think the feeling is that they are trying to load balance the servers.
When they first switched over to the new system I was assigned item numbers in 100XXXXXXXXX block, 15XXXXXXXXXXX block and 16XXXXXXXX block before finally settling on the 16's. I file my store items by item numbers so it did wreak havoc with my filing system - fortunately it was short lived.

OMG! My numbers are all mixed between 16019XXXXX and 1502XXXXXX now! WTF! I am going to have a HUGE mess if they don't straighten this out! Auctions are one thing - store where they sit in ebay-land for a LOOOONG time is quite another!

I have asked this before when this was discussed here on the forum (I think it was Neglus or Pixia) talking about it. I asked but no one ever explained.
I really do not know what difference it makes what number the auction is
Does it make any difference?
I am not playing ignorant, I AM ignorant about this "numbers" issue.

Consider a seller who has hundreds or thousands of small items listed.
The number doesn't make any difference until it comes time to pick the item, pack and ship it.
If the items aren't filed in numerical order, how are you going to find the one you're looking for? You also need to keep them in the order they were listed.

Good god I only have 9000 items listed and my postcards (for the most part) are filed in ascending numerical order and finding them will be a nightmare if they don't get this fixed.
Once they are put in the store they are batched by numerical range based on the ebay numbers. If I moved items to my store today, I would have every other item having a different number base - I can't live with THIS! What are the thinking?? Or, ARE THEY THINKING???

Fluffy,
Your characterization of eBay's IT as children is dead on. Children haven't yet realized that there are consequences, many unforeseen, to their actions. Becoming an adult includes the ability to foresee more consequences, and to allow for those that can't be foreseen by being conservative in weighing the benefits of a change against the (potentially unanticipated) consequences.
For example, eBay went to its longer auction number format (12 digit) without, to my memory, any advance word. I'm sure that I wasn't the only person scrambling to allow for the longer length in my software. Children.

Neglus,
They DO think, but only in their small blinkered world. They don't seem to understand that as eBay has grown, so has the complexity of the larger eBay world (i.e., eBay proper and the associated coupled systems of sellers).
Complex systems all become less stable, and one of their characteristics is an asymmetrical relationship between input and output. So, a small change on the input end can have a disproportionate influence at the output end (e.g., changing the numbering (a small change) results in making some other systems (i.e., your filing method) fail).

They should be required to sell on eBay before they can work for eBay.
That's my little pipe dream.

Thanks Fluffy , Neglus for explaining what the numbers issue was.
I thought that it was being said -Search in eBay (for potential buyers) is effected by the number of the item.

Neglus,
Yikes! Sounds like eBay's created a real mess for you!! And if you changed all the old numbers to the new auction numbers... what's to say eBay won't change them again in a couple of months.
Can I make a suggestion for a way that you might be able to make life easier for yourself? A long time ago... someone on this board (can't remember who) suggested that paper ephemera be filed via the name of the picture used in the auction listing. Ever since, that's how I file my ads. I take all the pictures at once, use a batch process in photoshop to rename (as well as other things) all at once... and then if I ever forget where the item is... I just right-click on the image.... look at the file name... and voila problem solved! With my own website, it's even easier.... 'cause I can set the SKU to be the same number as well! Just a thought! It's gotta be better than relying on something that eBay can change on you!
Oh... and to give you an idea on how my picture naming conventions go... I start out with my first batch of pictures being AA followed by a three digit incremental number:
AA001.jpg
AA002.jpg
AA003.jpg
etc...
Then, the next batch would be:
AB001.jpg
AB002.jpg
AB003.jpg
etc...
You can just keep on going and going.... And it makes finding them a snap!

I've started filing my postcards by scanned batch date, which is included in each scan's name. Works well but I haven't found a way to get the jpg name to download from eBay on shipping day, so I have to manually go into each sold item, right click on the pic to get the name.

Last week I started getting NEW numbers (3700's) - and they dropped the 1500's - leaving me with 1600's and 3700's .... for now.
Eauction - I found a way to work with the numbers but thanks for the idea. I am ok for now - hopefully there will not be too many more changes like this.

Been on 19 forever. Suddenly, on 20 for about half the items. Called Dead Help but of course ... "numbers are randomly assigned and perhaps the system has exhausted the 1900s." No, plenty left.
I suspect that this may be a tweaking for the "new improved" search ... but that's just a suspicion. eBay rep vehemently denied that -- but noting that he appeared clueless on the rest, surprised at his very fast answer. At least, I think I would start there if I were presorting results. But then, I don't work for eBay!
