We have a laptop, firefox will work, but IE will not work. It just seems to be trying to open the page: yahoo.com and finally I get the error message about not being able to open. My brother-in-law had visited and I am not sure if he changed something. Any ideas? Also, how do I find out what version of IE, is on this thing? The operating system is: XP, laptop is a Toshiba. What a PITA!

sounds like the connection properties has changed in IE. Go to Control Panel Internet options and on the connections tab check to see what it says to use for connection it varies if you have dialup or another type connection, at bottom is Lansetting button click that and see if it has the check mark in Automaticaly detect settings if not maybe that is your problem if using a DSL connection. If dialup I don't remember what it should say. Also on a DSL connection it will probably say on the connection tab never dial a connection and that is not changeable that I know of. You want to know what version of IE you are using go to top of the IE browser and under help click about IE and a window pops up to tell you version, build, oem number etc etc.

You can also get to the connection tab within IE browser at top under tools go to Internet options then connection tab. Someone else will have to tell you about dialup porperties if using dialup, been too long for me to remember. Good luck

irked:
thank you for writing...I tried all of that and it still does not work! My son had downloaded the google toolbar, so I can't find the help button! It used to work, I know it must be a simple button, but I can't figure it out.

hwahwa:
Yep, we have a wireless card in our laptop and we have a DSL line.

Any other suggestions, I will try!

top of your screen. do you see:

FILE EDIT VIEW HISTORY BOOKMARKS TOOLS HELP

just downloading the google toolbar should not affect that.

do you have XP? try system restore.

Do you have automatic updates for IE & Microsoft? Have you done them lately?

have you run a virus or trojan scan lately?

I recommend SpyBot http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

xblock http://www.xblock.com/onlinescan.php

EMSI is also good.

EWIDO is good. http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/

This is your laptop's way of telling you that it's time to dump Exploder and start using a better product. Embrace Firefox and if you can't import your bookmarks, so what.

Glassgrl is right start with System restore.
Start menu/help support/ tools/ restore computer to earlier date pick a date available before your son got on your laptop. Hopefully your PC is set for restoring. Let us know if that helped.

I use firefox love it and know that sometimes it is still good to have a working IE for some sites and to do windows update.
Do you have IE 7 or IE 6. I had problems with IE 7 which is latest version of IE and I uninstalled it from control panel/ add remove program panel. I would NOT uninstall it until after you do a restore with system restore though. You can also do uninstall of google toolbar there too.

Thank you for all of the replies.

My son informed me that the wireless on that computer always times out on IE (7), but doesn't on firefox. So he plugged it in and it worked. I have no idea, why it is behaving that way, it also overheats quite easily unless we sit it up about 2" off the desk. Has anyone tried the cool pads for laptops? This laptop is about 4 years old, but I need it to last a bit longer! I have a desktop which I use 100% of the time, my son uses the laptop and we take it on vacations.

me too - I haven't installed IE 7. something about it just didn't feel right to me.

I depend on firefox with an occasional IE if I absolutely have to.

I suggest you use the XP restore feature and go back to when IE did work or before your brother visited.Which ever came first. If something was changed in you settings this will return you to when it worked properly. Then avoid making the same mistake again!

UNINSTALL IE 7 through the control panel, then go to Windows update and let it find the updates it will want to reinstall IE7 unchoose it and choose to hide (HIDE that update for any future downloading and it won't download and reinstall. Dump IE7 problems solved. Maybe.

I use a cooling pad I got on ebay fairly cheap and it works great. If your laptop is getting hot or more so maybe your internal fan has gone out not working or needs to be air-blown out to clean it, look on bottom at fan and see if it is dirty. They need cleaning just like desktop computers need cleaning to keep the air flowing... Some laptops you can't see the fan but you may be able to so look and see if it needs cleaning. Would be worth having someone who does this type stuff to clean it for you if you can't. I use an air compressor on my stuff with filter between source and outlet of air to keep water off components. I also keep the fans from spinning when I clean them so as not to over rotate them with fast blast of air.

Just a thought but you might want to check if your Toshiba or it's batteries have been recalled. A number of older laptops had faulty batteries that have been known to overheat and in some case burst into flame. The manufacturers will replace recalled batteries with brand new ones for free. Check on the Toshiba USA website.

Hope this helps!
