I read this article this summer and it has bothered me ever since. Lot of strange things have happened this year - stores in search, stores out of search, launch of seemingly redundant ebay express, strange search results, broken searches, the unprecedented fee increase for stores in the middle of the year (and designed to knock out mega-sellers)...what the HECK is ebay thinking??? I wonder if this article tells us about ebay's vision of the future...I am pretty sure it tells us that more changes are coming - and focus is less on the ebay marketplace and more on e commerce in general:

Here's the quote that's really scary:
"Meanwhile, the lab's researchers are analyzing eBay from within and without -- improving the backend hardware and software that keep the existing online marketplace running, while coming up with new ways to make users feel more at home when selling and buying on the site."

I wish with my whole heart they would stop tinkering with things..... The search is so screwed up and the "watch this item" crap!!! Bid don't watch... Remember when you used to have to bid or write numbers down ... we all had our methods... but the watch this item has really hurt sellers. My opinion.
"what the HECK is ebay thinking???"
Damned if I know?????? Like I said I wish they would stop tinkering.

Those were the days when sellers and buyers became friends through their transactions. When 'chatting' through the emails was fun and informative. Those were the days when interesting items were listed for those of us who were looking for some unique antiques, and getting into a bidding war with another buyer was exciting! Those were the days when sellers made a few bucks for their ingenuity and enterprise. Those were the days when you felt that eBay really wanted your business and they were willing to make a profit without gouging their partners in business (sellers & buyers, too).
And those were the days when bottom feeders and shillers were active and one soon learned the difference between the legit and otherwise -- and how to avoid both. Those were the days when you did your snipes with two or more windows open and the blood pressure went up as the seconds were ticking down. Those were the days when a small-time seller (like me) could afford to list just a few unique items a day and still make a profit. A profit that paid for a summer vacation with my grandsons AND paid for the remodeling of our home.
Yes, I agree! I wish it was the same as it was five years ago...and six years ago...and seven years ago...and... Yes, those were the days of "Buyer Beware!" But that was half the fun of shopping eBay. We were pioneers in marketing and purchasing through a new venue. It was fun! It was challenging! It was addictive!
There have been a few improvements that truly ARE improvements, but over-all, I'd prefer that eBay could be as it was...

And this is why I snipe!
However, the Watched Items reminders come through daily from eBay, and had your customer put it in 'watch' rather than 'bookmarked', she would have been aware of it closing soon.
If I lose a snipe, I have watched items as back-up for products I want to purchase.
I'm glad, as a buyer, that there is a way to keep track of the listings I want to consider/bid on.
