I have a old Linksys BEFSR41 V2 with built in 4 Port 10/100 Switch that I got years ago at a sale - it's still like new in the box with CD and manual.
I've got a "newer" computer last month with wireless capability and I was thinking of using a wireless router. I was wondering if this Linksys is too out dated to try to use - it doesn't even mention XP or Firefox.
I really don't know much about routers but I did some checking and the new Linksys models are very pricey. I thought you could pick up a wireless router for about $50 at Radio Shack?
I have high speed cable and all I really want to do is use my laptop in any room in my house.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

My husband got a new Linksys router at Wal-mart for $50. With the older routers, there are a lot of settings you have to put in manually and mess around with it to get it to work with what you have. He says the newer routers cut out all of that. So if you don't know how to put those settings in, it might be worth a little extra money to have the newer router and not have to worry about it. Good luck!
That router should work fine for your purposes. XP and Firefox don't "matter" to a router; it routes packets and doesn't care whether it's Linux or XP, IE or Firefox behind them.
I personally wouldn't use the CD to install it. It might well work correctly when plugged in and connected. If not, look at the manual and/or (via a direct connection) go to the Linksys site.

Hey Claude
Where have you been - have not heard much from you lately? Good to have you back.
I guess I could try it and if it gets to confusing go to plan B.
I was going the get hubby to add a router to my Christmas list but finding another item to add instead won't be a problem.
