This Native American rug belonged to the step-father of a friend of mine. The SF valued it highly but my friend and I know absolutely nothing about it. Can anyone give me any info? It's quite large...excluding fringe, its 83 by 53 inches. It looks like a woven wool...it's quite heavy. Thanks for any help!

I would say without hesitation you have a nice Mexican... maybe Peruvian blanket. Its very nice looking but I do not believe its American Indian.

Agree that this is not a Native American rug - and not Navajo by any means which are woven on vertical looms and except for some cheap Gallup throw rugs do not have exposed fringes on any end. Nor is the pattern Navajo or Pueblo. Could be Mexican or South American judging from the design. I have about 8 Navajo rugs left which are hanging on my walls, on my floors and small ones which I use for table covers not to mention the ones I sold when I moved to a small apartment so I am very familar with them. It is however a very nice rug.

Sounds like some agreement that this rug is either Mexican or South American...I really don't know much at all about rugs but the design does look more South American than Mexican...I'll try a google search...anyone know of any sites I might explore to find out more? Thanks again!

This isn't an indian rug. It's Mexican or Central American.

Failed to mention, there are some VERY astute buyers in the Ebay category for native american textiles. I've bid against several of them and also sold some pieces to them. Rugs like this one that are listed as Indian or Native American invariably go begging for bids, unless they're rare old Saltillo's or something that someone has mis-categorized.

On 2nd thought, I would suspect this rug is Mexican judging from the 2 warriors squaring off holding axes and shields. The one on the left in the yellow/white suit is wearing a helmet type mask which is typical of Aztec costume when going into battle. Perhaps this was a copy of a pre Hispanic motif on a pottery vessel or in a codex.

Another interesting aspect I just noted is that the white figure appears to be "swallowing" the gray figure...there seems to be a small gray head in the mouth of the white warrior. Anyone have any idea at all where I could send a photo of this to get a definitive identification? There are LOTS of really smart people on this board so I've got my fingers crossed...Thanks for all the insights...

I don't think he is swallowing anyone. I think it's someone in costume

Quite right. The gray face ( probably painted gray) is the warrior's face and the head is covered with a helmet depicting some type of animal. There were elite "divisions" in the Aztec army such as eagle warriors or jaquar warriors who wore helmet like headresses. Event oday in spite of Spanish supression of the old culture, they do have dances pepicting Jaquars ( called tigres) in which a tigar mask is worn and the performers wear jump suits decorated with rosettes or tiny jaquar masks.
