Those big cats are cougars and very dangerous. Port Alberni, British Columbia is on Vancouver Island and deer frequent the area. The cougars are after the deer. However they have been known to attack humans. Not sure what the dogs are.

I wonder what those cougars did to the cameraman when the flash went off and startled them as he snapped that picture?

It's a trick. The two cougars on each side of the dog are the same foto, just reversed. I believe this is atleast 2 fotos superimposed on each other. I believe the dog is a "benji" dog. Whatever breed that is.

Paloma - They are not mirror imaged. Body stances are way too different. I'm betting they are stuffed.

Yeah, methinks fenix is right! The photographer yelled to the props man: "Get stuffed!"

Fenix IS right. If those cats were real, we'd be trying to identify two carcasses instead of two live dogs.

As to the original question: they're mutts. No discernible breed, just like Benji, who was MUCH smaller than these two.

Looks like irish wolf hound puppies to me.

As photographed by this Championship breeder (or so she says)

Yes, the puppies are Irish Wolfhounds. The dogs pictured with the cougars are not: heads are the wrong shape, ears are the wrong shape and set wrong, bodies are the wrong shape, proportion of leg to body is wrong and they appear to be light brown or red, colors which IWs are not, young puppies which haven't matured into their adult coats notwithstanding.
Not every dog every drawn, painted, scuplted or photograhped is purebred, and not every mixed breed dog's parentage can be determined at a glance.

could they be wolf pups??
here is some information on Alberni,Vancouver Island-
The Indians are a superstitious race, and one of the old fetishes was this: that if by chance they could secure the young of a wolf from which to take some precious inner part, to rub upon the outer side of their canoes, it gave great luck in whaling, and thus it came to pass that when the klootsmuk found the she wolf's lair, they formed the plan of taking to their brother the four wolf pups, in order that he might become the chief of all whale hunters. Cautiously they placed them in the baskets on their backs and then retraced their steps. In time they reached the beach, and entered their canoe, when just as they pushed off, with giant springs and angry howl leapt the great mother wolf from the woods, but the klootsmuk were safe with their strange prizes, and soon their canoe cut gleefully through the waves, while their songs were wafted landward by the western breeze.
