What you describe is the base unit to an early version of a mammogram machine. They were also used briefly by the Los Angeles police department to aid in squeezing confessions out of male criminal suspects. The supreme court ended that practice.

OTOH, it could be part of a grape press used by Monks in Napa, Calif. to make wine.

Doesn't sound like a printing press. Letterpresses use a wheel and belt system. (When I first got into graphics and printing I use to work one of those and I can't begin to explain what a pain setting type for that bad boys was.)

GOOGLE "Wooden Press" then select "images" at the top. I have a feeling you'll see something similar to what you have on page 2 (if it's what I am picturing that is). If so, it's a leaf or flower press.

I've been looking now for almost an hour. I think the best thing I can do is post a foto

That does usually help - you are probably going to need one to sell it anyway.

Fenix, It is so cool looking. I don't know what either myself or my kid would do with it. I wish I could find some use for it besides having it just sit there. I don't know what this man did with it. He did lots of wood work, macrame/Marlinspike <--(see, I did learn a little bit.) So I am thinking that it may have something to do with one of these two things. It is very heavy for it's size and heavy duty.

Paloma, take a look at eBay auction 7601681763. That's a book press. If it doesn't look like that, could it be a wine press? Those have a an open circular wooden piece on top. It is probably not for an herbarium, which usually has four clamps -- one in each corner.

I won't be able to list a foto for a few days yet. The family that gave me the press is still cleaning out the house which means I have more stuff. This stuff is just as great. I'll try to get to it soon

I knew an artist that made her own paper to paint on and she used a press that looked simular to that one you posted. Just an idea.

That is a neat old lantern, kinda like the ones depicted being used by train conductors or what ever they were called.

Could it be a flower press? I guess paper makes more sense.

Flower press was the first thing I thought of too.

The lantern looks like a carriage or antique car lantern from the back mount.

From the scratched info, I would suspect that it might have been someone's first car. Wausa Nebraska , March 27, 1914. The center looks like someones initials TAW, 14 (for 1914). Might have also been used for a courting lantern if you can find a place where a wire handle had been attached.

Sweet stuff. Ask the family. That maybe Grandpaw's graffiti

Thanks very much Ray for info on both items. I will be helping them today so I will ask them about the lantern and the initials. I looked for auctions with this press a few days ago and found zip. I also did a google search and found nothing. thanks for finding them.

I agree with LtRay. The lantern is either for a carriage or antique car. I have a few of these hanging on the wall in the garage on my display wall.

mystery solved. It belonged to the family. It is a carriage lantern the familie's last name started with a "W" It was my friend's grandfather's and they did live in Wausa, NB so there it is. Mystery is solved.
