Has anyone figured out a way to save the thumbs that Windows creates when viewing files? Seems it would be a simple way to save them instead of running thru another program to get thumbs.

If not, what program do you use to create thumbnails? I'm looking to process batches and keep the name the same, only change the format from jpg to gif for the thumbs.

have you looked at Google's Picasa?

I used it to pull all my pics off my computer before I formatted it.

I took a look at Picasa but I don't think it will do what I want. I need individual thumbs for each item.

I've been using a program called My Thumbnails. It works fairly good except on weird shaped photos. Any photo that is not fairly square it stretches and makes poor quality thumb.

Take a look at Irfanview.
I don't use it for this, but it has a pretty rich batch rename/conversion operation, that might work for you.
The batch conversion will do resizing and you can tell it to preserve the aspect ratio.
