I sent a package to a customer. She wrote and stated that I owed her $2.89 because there was only $.96 in postage on the package and the postman charged her the additional.
I send my items First Class with DC. I place a styrofoam cube measuring 1" in the package. I wrote the customer back explaining this and that the post office made a mistake and to bring the package and the cube with her so that they can measure it. I also gave her the link to the USPS website page that states the requirements for a first class package with DC.
She wrote me back today and stated that she brought it all in and they measured it and it measures just under 3/4". How can that be? I took one of the cubes again and measured it and it measures 1". Now add the envelope and patterns inside and I know it measures AT LEAST 3/4".
She stated not to worry about the difference in money, but I am really perplexed. I wrote her back, apologized and offered to refund the difference in postage, but that I took a cube here and measured it and it does measure 1".
Any ideas?

Is it possible that the styrofoam cube got compressed by bigger packages laying on top?

Perhaps. I did ask her if it got crushed in any way. BUT, get this, all of my packages are taken to the post office and the clerk weighs and affixes the appropriate postal label stamp to it. That's got to tell the other post office that the package was weighed and measured by the USPS.

I use bubble wrap myself. I guess it "could" all pop out before it gets there but I think it would have to take an elephant to do it.
I bought a half off coupon online locally and they mailed it using Endicia and had a VERY hard piece of plastic inside of it shaped like an L or a V. I figured it must of weighed as much as the whole package!
Postage in a white first class tyvek envelope was 73 cents with DC.
At least that lil puppy wasn't getting squshed.

Since were talking about the post office ,Is anyone having a problem with slow delivery ? I shipped out 4 Priority packages Monday morning at 9:00 AM and it has taken them 5 days to delivery all of them but one and it's still not there yet. Normal Priority is 2-3 days with no guarantee but dang 5 days ? I should shipped parcel post lol it would have taken the same amount of time

I think that when you mail your package you know the clerks and they let maybe a 1/2 inch go by because they think nobody will check it again. Well I don't think that is the case that maybe someone is redoing the packages and sees the under limit and then proceedes to send the package priority mail and charges the buyer more money. I think there was something like this posted before. I also add an ounce to my weight when I do my postage at home just for this sort of thing. Who knows what happens on the other end...

Toasted,
I'm having the same "slow" service this week. Mailed a Priority package from PA to CA (Los Angeles) last Friday. Of course, I get an e-mail from the buyer on Saturday asking where it was...
So, I explain that it normally takes 3 business days (2-3 on average for us) and let me know if it didn't get there by Thurs (6 days). Well! Guess what? Today is 7 days (5 business days) and still no package. Of course, they didn't scan it upon entry into the system... So, my buyer is probably thinking -- "Yeah, the check's in the mail, right?"
I called the PO in Los Angeles and talked to a sweet "little" worker there. She tells me: "If you used electronic confirmation, it can take 7-10 days." Well, that's a bunch of bunk, isn't it...
So, I tell my buyer I called her PO and checked, but it hasn't arrived at their location yet, and since it wasn't scanned at the entry point, they really don't know where it is right now... (Auuuugghhhh!)
Gonna go get me a stamp that reads:
SCAN ME - SCAN ME NOW, PLEASE!

I was told by my postlady the UPPS is holding packages so they don't have to pay the mail carriers more money. I told her that wasn't fair or right when we are expecting packages and it could be very important to receive it soon.

Wayne, ugh at least I didn't have anyone e-mail the "Wheres my package" question and the last one made it Sat. so 6 days on it. Sounds like somethings going on cause up to last week everything was fine. Hope your package makes it Monday. It should be stamped for the day it was mailed out so your buyer will know your telling the truth.
