I've disliked the "ask a seller a question" option since it was introduced. I always preferred to respond to these questions directly to the potential bidder at their e-mail address rather than posting the answer in the body of the auction. It seemed more personal, and easier for the potential bidder. This way, the bidder received their answer directly. No need for them to remember which auction they asked a question of, and then go back to that auction to see the answer.

.Sadly....this option is no longer available. I suppose that Ebay would call this an upgrade. Now, when a potential bidder asks a question, you do not see the bidder's e-mail address and are unable to respond directly to the bidder. Now, you must answer only through Ebay. I guess the original person to person Ebay concept is a thing of the past. Ebay itself will be a thing of the past soon enough. Sell.

Haven't seen a change here.

All I do is hit reply icon on my e-mail to bring me to my AOL e-mail and proceed to write my answer. I do not reply through e-bay. It has always worked for me--in fact I just did it a minute ago with no problem.

I too just hit "reply" and reply to the questioner directly if it's something that's not appropriate for the auction page.

If you reply through eBay, you have to check a box for the question and answer to show in the auction. You can even hide your email address if you feel the question may be from someone who is just collecting email addresses for spam.

I have stopped responding directly to questions because I a noticed a huge increase in spam when I answer bidder's questions directly.

Now I only answer them thru the ebay page and hide my mail address. Spam levels have returned to low normal.

Should I feel the need to contact a bidder after he has sent an email thru ebay, I can find his email addy by doing a search on his user name which is always included in the email from ebay.

.That is exactly what I always do as well. This time though, the return address was [email protected]. No buyer e-mail address to reply to. The potential buyer's user id was in the e-mail, but I don't know of a way of finding a users e-mail address if you have their user id, unless they are a bidder already in an active auction. This was a question that was sent with 30 minutes left in the auction. Now the auction is over and I have no way of responding.

I just sent a question to myself from a second account. It came through as usual with the return address of the bidder's e-mail. Don't know what happened in the case that started this thread. Maybe there is a way for a user to opt out of including their email address in "ask a seller" questions, but I don't see where. Maybe it's something that Ebay is tinkering with and using occassionally.

I think if you receive general questions (ie: they click on 'contact this user' from the Feedback page)or a question on an ended listing, the ASQ comes without a "reply to" address other than ebay. Be very careful though - the scam password phishing emails are also coming without a "reply to": address requiring you to sign-on (and give your password away) to "ebay".

There is a checkbox on the ask seller interface which says something like hide email address for security purpose. That is the culprit.

You received a spam question. DO NOT CLICK THE RESPOND LINK IN THE E-MAIL. It is an e-mail phishing for your ID and Password so they can take over your account. NEVER DO AS ITRAY SUGGESTS. She suggests clicking only the link. Her point is valid about spam, but a little spam is much better than losing control of your account to a scammer.

Yes it must be the way your preferences are set up. I still get the email addresses in my OE and depending what the question is - I reply directly to them or sometime go to ebay and answer the questions. It really helps if I have forgotten the details that they are requesting or something like that.

Stone, you've done it again... I don't know you why you keep saying I've told anyone to click on an email link.

I NEVER tell anyone to click on an email link! Quite the contrary, I will never click on an email link, even if it says they want to give me $$$. I only log directly into my Ebay account and answer the question from "My Ebay".

You will find an icon for questions on the auction link. If I can not find the link, their question will go unanswered.
