If I remember correctly, Fred & Barney got a super deal down at Bedrock Motors...

Use the money to rent a nice car.
Stay in motels or B&Bs.
Nobody has to cook.
Nobody has to clean.
It IS for a vacation ?????????

I LOVE to rent cars. You never have to kick the mud off your boots before you get in. You can eat watermelon in the front seat while you're driving and spit the seeds on the dash. If you run over a fire hydrant, you don't have to stop and get wet. If someone gets the license number, they will send the bill to Avis. You don't have to use the ash trays, and the mid size cars have plenty of room in the back seat for the empty beer bottles and the taco wrappers from Taco Bell. If you've ever been curious what would happen if you threw it into reverse at 60 mph, now's the time to find out. The best part is when you turn it in at destination (after you've siphoned out all the gas into empty milk containers, of course) is you can tell them that that's the way it was when you got it at origin, and they'll BELIEVE it. You can have an absolutely wonderful vacation with a rent-a-car. Be forwarned, though, they do get a little testy when you drill the hole in the roof to install a CB antenna.

niel35 - GO FOR IT!!!

For anyone who has never tried it, you just don't know what you're missing. Traveling in a motorhome is not like camping at all, it's like a rolling motel room. Of course we own our own motorhome so I can't really go on and on about...you never have to sleep in someone else's bed (simply because it's a rental) BUT, you never have to stop rolling along the highway (unless you are the driver) to take a pee break, make a snack, you can take your pets with you, you can nap or watch TV while going down the road and you can stop anywhere, anytime you want and not have to worry about check-in times and check-out times. And you don't have to eat in or cook if you don't want to - but you have that option. I would never again want to travel long distances in a car - even if it was a really nice car.

But be careful, once you try it, you may just like it and want to buy your own. It's is not an inexpensive thing to have - it's a luxury. They are costly, but that's why I sell on eBay. It enables us to have this great opportunity to see the country on our terms - when we want, where we want.

Below is the hubby relaxing in front of our motorhome last summer. It's really the only time he gets a chance to relax.

We also have a motorhome that we use up here summer and winter. I love my bathroom on wheels. I really miss it when we take trips to the lower 48 as we just do the rental car/motel thing. We usually rent a convertable to better enjoy the sunshine. Sometimes finding the motel with the highspeed internet is a challenge however.

Never rented, but we bought a Lance camper last year. Thought I would hate it, but I'm in love. No more lugging suitcases in and out. Just set it up and roll!

I also found I sleep much better at the relatives house when I'm parked in the yard, lol.

With the cost of gasoline where it is, I'll drive and stay at a hotel for my vacation. It'll be cheaper. Motorhomes and RV's are great fun, but they eat gasoline!!!

niel35 - Forgot to mention a great website if you want tons of camping or RV information for renting, setting up, places to stay, and anything else you could possibly want to know about RVing. You can become a member of the Community Forum and ask whatever questions you may have before you start out. The people on the chatboard are extremely helpful and don't make people feel stupid, even if you feel you are asking the dumbest questions, they are happy to help. There is a section of "Beginning RVing" that you might find especially helpful. There's a lot to learn before heading out - from the difference between gray water and black water, to how to properly level the thing and put out the slides, etc.

Go to: http://www.rv.net for general RV information, and to go directly to the Community Forum Chatboard to view questions from other members, go to: http://www.rv.net/forum/

RV enthusiasts are some of the nicest people we have ever met. Often when they spot newbies trying to set-up a camper or if you just need a little assistance or have questions, they are the first people to lend a hand. It's a great group of people out there and hope you can try it out. It could be the vacation of a lifetime for you.

Have fun!

Wow - thanks everyone - interesting to hear the pros and cons. We have 3 dogs and a parrot and thought it would be easier to take them with us than find someone to house/dog sit. I have never found anyone reliable for my little guys. We would want to rent and thought we would try it out for a week and see if we like it. We drove to Ft. Myers today and my back hurt, had to pee, was hungry and although the drive was pleasant I think a home on wheels might be better.
CTA - Great website and will check it out further. tnx

Niel, forgot you were in Florida. Don't forget, RV owners in Florida have an added bonus.... we have a home on wheels, so when those nasty hurricanes come, we don't have to drive 1200 miles to find a hotel room

We just put everything away and "hunker down" through it. It would be worse on the highway.

I have an uncle & aunt that do it nearly every year. (Rent an RV that is). They take about 2 months and travel to where ever. Finding a camping area in which to park is generally pretty easy. They even where out to see my parents, (about 1500 miles away) and parked the RV in their driveway and slept in the motorhome. They love it. I guess it is all a state of mind.

One thing to consider.
1) Do you want to do all that driving?

If so, have fun. If you have the time, great.

I use to rent a Travel trailor years ago. They would take it over to Disney's Wilderness campground and set it up for you. I use to take my Dad to Disney for a few days to get him out of the house. It would probably cost a fortune to do that now, that was 30 years ago. That was when you could buy at Hotdog at Disney for 50 cents LOL. Now I doubt if you could get the pack of mustard for that.

I worked at Ft Wilderness in 72-73! Loved it - until they had the cutbacks and transferred me to the WDW parking lot. I can't remember how much it was to camp there {brain damaged} but it was cheap compared to the hotels and a whole lot more fun. I cleaned campsites and drove the train.

The parking lot was the pits - hot and nasty. But I still remember my tram spiel.

"good morning everyone and welcome to Walt Disney World. My name is ______ and I'll be your hostess on the way to the magic kingdom. You parked in the ______ section and you'll need to remember this information when you leave...(and on and on and on)"

Great first job (although it wasn't my first job) as they send you to their brainwashing school to teach you they way they want you to treat the customers. Never get mad and never lose your cool. Remember the customer is always right.

Campers are really nice people though. They used to invite us in for breakfast.
