Here are three free shopping cart enabled stores you can use on your web site. I'm not affilliated with them. I've used OSCommerce and recommend it.

OSCommerce: http://www.oscommerce.org/

CRE Loaded: http://creloaded.com/index.php

Zen Cart: http://www.zen-cart.com/modules/frontpage/

One of the advantages of OSCommerce is that it has a huge community with online help readily available. Depending on your features requirements, one of the others might be a better choice for you.

I've tried OSCOmmerce and like it a lot, but they haven't updated it in AGES. If it were more "active" I'd be more inclined to implement it for actual use.

Replay

Do you have a merchant account and accept CC's? If so, is it through Verisign or some other company?

Yes, I do have one.

It's just a regular "manual" terminal that works though my bank. I've never been quite confident enough in my stock levels to hook my website directly into my bacnk account.

I just key in and process the credit card numbers manually. I've never been busy enough to call THAT a problem

CRE Loaded (above) is supposed to be a supercharged version of OSCommerce.

Do these sites actually host stores, or do they just provide software and the user has to pay someone else to host?

Gtootie,

An alternative to a merchant account: Paypal has a shopping cart system and/or payment buttons that you can incorporate into your own website. I have been using their payment buttons for years. I want to implement their shopping cart but just haven't gotten around to it. You can see how I use it here:

I already have a merchant account, I was asking for a different reason. Thanks anyway.

Peleorus, everything mentioned in this thread so far is just the software. You still need to have a web hosting account to have a place to put the software. One good choice is ipowerweb.com ($7.95 a month).

I'm looking for a good and cheap shopping cart that is compatible with my merchant account through Verisign. I also want one that is easy to set up.

Mal's Ecommerce is an old favorite if you already have a merchant account. It's not a store, it's a free shopping cart. (There's also an upgrate version for $6/month.) You can incorporate it into your existing web site.

This one looks interesting: PHP Multishop

http://www.php-multishop.com/

It's a "virtual mall" for OSCommerce. Kind of like a portal to a group of stores, with news, chet, etc.

You could get a bunch of sellers together, or else create your own mall and rent space out to other people. Check out their demo.

Free, open source.
