I know it's posted here before, but I have been back and forth between the postings and can't find it (Vendio needs a search feature!).
I need a good basic program/tool/you know what I mean to reduce the size of my images. Any help is always appreciated very much!

http://www.irfanview.com/ Small download, free, easy to use, eBay uses it in some of their eBay University courses.

Thank you everyone!
Okay, now to sound like the Village Idiot (heck, every village needs one, right?)...
I do have Picture It! as well as about four or five other image programs. Is all I have to do to "crunch" the jpegs on a pic is reduce the actual size of the image itself?
I AM the village idiot when it comes to techy stuff like this!

YES & NO!
Two different concepts...
If you REDUCE the L X W of a PIC from 1200 x 1200 to 400 x 400, then OF COURSE the corresponding resolution will decrease somewhat -- but maybe NOT enough??
Tis nice to keep yer RESOLUTION under 100kb for all dose DIAL-UP folks!
So, AFTER you reduce yer PIC, you have to COMPRESS it (reduce the RESOLUTION =number of pixies/in) further to DECREASE the load time...
This also REDUCES both FILE SIZE & QUALITY -- thus, these CRUNCHED pics ain't for PRINTING, just for the WEB!
Read that tutorial -- tis pretty GOOD!

Obviously, I ain't a photo expert, but all my pics, I do the following with IRFAN-VIEW:
1) CROP out da crap in the background...
/then/
2) REDUCE PIC SIZE (L xW) to around no larger than 500 x 500
/then/
3) COMPRESS the RESOLUTION (if still needed) to no larger than 100kb...

Hi all,
In PictureIt! you'll find the compression and size selections by clicking the Options box that shows up after you click on Save As.
I don't generally change the size because my pictures are already a good size for eBay. The compression level is set to 10%.

EXAMPLE: 45kb with size=500 x 290
CROPPED & COMPRESSED with IV...
Another nice little trick with IV is make a composite pic, showing front & back of object in one pic:

BTW: Ralphie talked me into purchasing "Picture It! Photo Premium" -- thought it to be a waste of moola compared to what I had FOR FREE from IrfanView...

Tom or anyone else - Why does the Irfanview desktop icon look like roadkill?? Scared me away from using it for a couple of years LOL. My sister just started selling on ebay and I told her use IV for images - now we affectionately call it " ROADKILL "

wgm,
You might want to read through this thread I started awhile back:
http://www.vendio.com/mesg/read.html?num=2&thread=585777
In it I talk about how to use Adobe Photoshop Elements to batch process lots of images. Hope it helps!

I use the program that came with my Olympus csmera & reduce to 550 X 412 & they come out very nice. A lot has to do with the # of pixels in your camera. Mine is 5 megs.

You guys are the best - thank you so much for all your suggestions!
Tom, I have a question on the composite photo. I read the tutorial, and have also checked the "help index" at IF and can't find the instructions on how to do that. Could you dumb it down for me? And just remember, I am technically challenged when it comes to images LOL

IV calls this a PANORAMA IMAGE:
OPEN any image with IV in a folder that you have the TWO or THREE (etc...) images you want to create with...
At the TOP, click
Image...
/then click/
"Create Panorama image..."
/opens up a dialog box for pic selection/
Pick either Horizontal or Vertical...
/then click/
"SELECT IMAGES" to pick the pics you want...
/then click/
"CREATE IMAGE"...
there's yer new HORIZ or VERT composite IMAGE...
/then/
RESIZE if desired...
and SAVE AS!
easy-peazy!
