From their announcement page ( bit of a gamble with only a one day duration? Why not a two day as well? )

()()()()()()()()

***Coming Soon: 1-Day Listings***
Date: 09/17/03 Time: 09:12:08 AM PDT

We are pleased to announce that we will soon be introducing 1-Day Listings. In addition to the currently available 3, 5, 7, and 10 day durations, sellers will be able to list their items in auction format for a 1-day duration. To list a 1-Day Listing, sellers are required to have either a minimum feedback rating of 10 or be ID Verified.

The 1-Day Listing feature enables sellers to quickly sell more inventory of a single item, and sellers listing "perishable" items, like event tickets, will now be able to benefit from a faster auction format as well. Bidders enjoy speedy listing endings and access to more items. Finally, around the holidays, 1-Day Listings help both buyers and sellers make the most out of the last few days of the shopping season!

The 1-Day Listing feature will be available this Fall. We hope that this new feature will help enhance your eBay buying and selling experience!

Regards,
eBay

They should really call it 3/4 day listings - it takes 6 hours to get an auction indexed by eBay's search engine

They really should just let you fill in the blank on any number of days up to 7.

I am a big believer in ending on Sunday night. I usually run Sunday-to-Sunday for auctions. If I'm running behind, it sure would be nice to be able to launch a 6 day auction on Monday to end on Sunday rather than run NOTHING the entire week waiting for the next Thursady or Sunday.

One day is really cutting it close. Anything under 3 days is a waste of fees in my opinion.

It has alwyas boggled my mind as to why ebay doesn't offer 4 and 6 day auctions.

I have posted the issue here many times and the response has always been the same ..no one thinks it can be done.

Technically ebay should allow you to specify the ending starting date and time.

What the f--- is so magical about 3, 5 and 7 day durations?? and What is wrong with 4 and 6 day durations?

The search indexing is now very fast. Ebay fixed the slow indexing of search items several months ago.

i had heard quite some time back they would do this ... it was aimed at concert goers that 'suddenly' couldn't use their tickets and wanted to sell them FAST.

It can also be a tool that sellers of illegal listings can use. The less time their items are on, the less time ebay will have to end the auctions.

Just think of the possibilities. The posters here who repeatedly cliam that they are achieving 90-100% sell through rates can now increase their profits by 300-700% by using the 1 day auctions.

I guess I will give it a try. Almost sounds like BIN though. Buyers will surely benefit if a seller thinks they can list low -- they wont get the exposure long enough to catch raising bidders, right? Or will they? As I've said before, I think half the buyers on ebay are sellers! ha!

I personally think the longer the better. The bidders may bid mostly on the last day and that is easy to see but gawd knows how many people see the item in the other days.

Blairwitch is right about the possible abuse and ebay must be counting on its surveillance software to catch some of the abusers. There is a minor feedback requirement on the listing duration but that's a joke.

Horsey - how does this concept of shorter auctions increasing profits work? I'm wondering because I have about an 90% sell thru on one of my accounts with a healthy profit margin but if I can increase the profit margin by running shorter auctions zccording to your plan I would love to learn it.

"Horsey - how does this concept of shorter auctions increasing profits work?"

Simple....Thanks to my grade one mathematics : Fluffy sells 10 apples with a 90% sell through via a 7 day auction at a profit of 8 cents each. Weekly profits =9x8=72 cents.
Fluffy sells 10 apples with a 90% sell through via a 1 day auction at a profit of 8 cents each. Weekly profit =9x8x7= $5.04

It won't take Fluffy very long to be a multimillonaire.

Horsey - you should apply some second grade logic to your first grade mathmatics. You can rschedule 3, 5, 7, and even 10 days auctions so that you have auctions closing every day.

If all it takes is apples to become a millionaire.... I gotta run to the grocery story... BRB!

One day listings aren't for the collectibles auctions. It is for the fixed price mass marketer on eBay. It will allow the miracle diet pills to come to the toip of the category sooner and sell and re-list.

eBay also profits from one day listings- it produces a quicker turn around and re-list cycle.

I was going to say that's what buy-it-now is for- but, of course you can't bid upwards on a BIN.
LIke someone else in this thread I would prefer to dial in my own number of days.

Actually, sellthrough hasn't been lower than 96% in many months.

It doesn't take Stephen Hawking to figure out the items are going to get bids.

As it turns out, I'm going to longer auctions, rather than shorter. It would only make sense to run large numbers of 1-day auctions if I had an unlimited supply of jewelry and unlimited free labor....and I wouldn't do it even then.
