More ebayers at garage sales might equal less deals?

Hi, just last week when I was doing some research I came across an auction that had a me page. I read the page and she started with: Looking for something rare, looking for something you need. Let me know and I will scout it out for you. I am in the thrifts daily and garage sale every weekend. Nothing like giving the store away. Ya think!

I think more and more will be selling on ebay instead of garage sales, but there are still a lot of deals out there. I actually do hear a lot of chatter about ebay when I am at garage sales, but even if people talk about it, most don't have the knowledge or desire to sell things that way. I purchased a CD collection from someone this weekend who said she could get more by selling to a used cd store than what she was asking for, and certainly more than my offer, but she took my offer anyway. Those hundred dollar bills really have a way of closing the sale I guess (After I listed, I was happy with my purchase, but disagreed she would have gotten more)

Plus, people will adjust to any changes to the market. When I purchase things at garage sales, they fall into two categories - Things I can buy to sell online, and things I can buy cheaply that novices will buy for more at my garage sale, thinking they can make money online - It all comes down to knowledge, those with it will probably do well, those without it will sink...

I think the article shows it the other way around. Not ebayer sellers selling at garage sales but buying at garage sales. If more and more ebay sellers hit the garage sales the old supply and demand ratio may come into effect and the good ebayable stuff may go for more money.

I see more and more flea market sellers that are pricing their stuff very close to what it goes for on ebay and the many garage sale sellers may start doing that more and more as well. As the internet and ebay becomes more and more mainstream the garage sale and flea market deals may be harder and harder to find.

Yes, there is money to be made by buying at garage sales and selling on ebay. Posters on this board have proven it many times.

There was a link to the Goodwill auctions in the article and I hadn't looked there in ages and they have bids on almost everything. I guess their reputation for stealing all that money, etc. didn't hurt them at all?

Those who have garage sales continuously may be aware of market values but others who only have a couple of sales in their lifetimes mostly just want to get rid of things and aren't totally aware of what they have.

I went to a garage sale Saturday in the poorest section of our town (my favorite garage sale area). The garage and back yard were stuffed full of stuff from the 30's thru the 70's. Everything priced cheap and they said they hadn't had a lot of business.

let everybody else run for the "rich side of the tracks". leaves more of the good stuff for me.

Amen rarriflle, I could not say it better myself. I love when all the dealers go to the "choice areas", that leads the other side of the tracks for me. Living here in South Florida when the winter snow birds come down, they employ a great deal of these people. They also give gifts to them be it perfume, jewelry, a great deal of designer clothing, etc. This is usualy what I buy at their garage sales, so it is definately to the other side of the tracks for me. Besides, they seem to be very grateful when you purchase something.

I realize that some garage sale sellers have frequent sales and some have them once-a-decade. The rapid growth of ebay and the internet touches most people in some way or the other. If a little old lady wants to have a rare garage sale then a neighbor or relative may offer to help her price her better items via ebay for example. You hear the phrases like "it goes for x amount on ebay" more and more at flea markets and garage sales. Slowly but surely ebay is extending it's influence into areas such as garage sales.

Yes, it is Ace. I never used to hear "EBAY" thrown around at the Flea Market and now I hear it buzzed about quite a bit. Sux really. But there are some who know about and cant be bothered with it. Alot of the flea market dealers just want their cash and go. Same with garage sales. So hopefully there will still be some good deals to be had out there!

at the garage sale I spoke of earlier the ladies granddaughter was helping her out and had put some of her own jewelry out for sale. all of it had been purchased on ebay.

she was trying to price a ring and she kept saying "I just paid $30.00 for that ring on ebay".

I guess she is just a buyer because she had plenty there to choose from if she was a seller.
