Rec'd this last night. Please read the one after this. It will explain this virus. BTW, this concerns one of our own who is innocent in the whole thing. A lot of the things I'm getting seem to be originating from AOL folk. I got two of these and unfortunately, I deleted the one that used one of our own as the sender. DO NOT FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS THAT ARE IN THIS EMAIL IT IS A HOAX:

Unfortunately a virus has been passed to me through an address book virus which also infected my address book. Since you are in my address book you will probably find it in your computer too. The virus (called jdbg.exe) is not detected by Norton or McAfee Antivirus systems. The virus sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system. It is sent automatically by 'messenger' and by address book, whether or not you sent e-mail to your contacts. Basically, that means you will pass it along unknowingly, as I did. I was sent this e-mail and am now passing it on to you as to how to check for the virus and how to get rid of it. Please do this! Its very simple to do and takes about 3 minutes.

1. Go to Start, then click your 'Find' or 'Search' option

2. In the folder option, type the name...jdbgmgr.exe

3. Be sure to search your C Drive and all the sub folders and any other drives you may have

4. Click 'Find Now'

5. The virus has a teddy bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe

DO NOT OPEN IT!

6. Go to Edit (on the menu bar) and select delete. It will then go to the recycle bin. If you find the virus, you must contact all the people in your Address Book so that they may eradicate the virus from their own address book.

To do this:

1. Open a new e-mail message

2. Click the icon Address Book next to 'TO'

3. Highlight every name and add to "BCC"

4. COPY THIS MESSAGE AND PASTE TO E-MAIL

This will affect everyone in your address book so send it now!!!

Wendy

This is an email I rec'd this morning

Looks like I got hit tonight by a good one! Please read the email from some nice person who informed the dummy after all the email scams I have been hit with in the past few weeks I got bit. They didn't get me with the Pay Pal or Ebay fake information emails but they got me with this one. I am the seller Granfanola on Ebay this is why you are getting this message because you are in my address book. With all the firewalls and virus protection I use I did not understand how one could have got through. Now the dummy knows, one didn't get through. Please excuse my reaction but after the worms and sobig virus attacks my nerves were a little bit frayed and it was easy for me to go stupid. I am very sorry for the aggravation. Also to the writer of this fake email warning if I ever get my big fat hands on your carcass, you are in deep trouble!

REGARDING YOUR VIRUS WARNING:
DO NOTHING!!!!
THIS IS A HOAX!
THAT LITTLE BEAR BELONGS THERE!
SEE BELOW.

The Jdbgmgr Hoax

April 2002

The jdbgmgr hoax is almost the same as the sulfnbk hoax in that it tells you to delete a program that was installed with Windows. jdbmgr.exe is the Java Debugger Manager and does have an icon that looks like a Teddy Bear. It is not, normally, a virus. As with all executables, it is not impossible to have a copy of jdbmgr.exe that is infected by a virus but that virus will be detected by your antivirus software.

Microsoft has posted the article Q322993 with information on how to replace jdbgmgr.exe if you have deleted it. Subject: IMPORTANT-VIRUS ALERT!!! Just get on the Microsoft website and look for article Q322993. It will tell you what to do.

Fortunately someone warned me about this hoax several months ago. Thanks for trying to protect us all though. You might want to forward this to all of the recipients of your original message. Or contact them in person before they mess up their computer. You are in my address book, but, I don't know who you are. ??? Hope this helps.

I remember that one from awhile back too. My understanding was that if you did accidentally delete the 'bear' it wouldn't harm your system.

On a side note (this should be in the pet peeves thread), don't you hate it when you're in the address book of people you don't know? There is a setting in Outlook Express that will automatically add people you email into your address book, and I think a lot of buyers don't know they have that option checked. I routinely get jokes or other "fluffy" emails from people I don't know, but if I go back and trace their email address it ends up being from people who have bought from me in the past.

I hula I agree. Why do buyers put the seller in their address book as I will have no reason to ever contact them again unless they buy something from me and eBay sees to it I get that email address again. I hate getting spam from them. I get forwarded emails from buyers a lot and I wish they would not put me in their address book. I never open anything with an attachment or a forward. I do not send any of these either. The only way I have a buyers email address is when I save the EOA notices from ebay and then at the end of the year they are thrown out.

My computer automatically adds the address to my address book. I would presume this is why people are adding theri buyers - it automatic. Every so many days I go in & delete them manually.

Cheryl-
I fell for this hoax quite some time ago. I followed the steps for removal & never ran in to any trouble over it.

If you use outlook, go up to tool, options and then the send tab. There you can uncheck the box that automatically stores any emails you respond to. I know this is old, but this seller was kind enough to contact everyone this hoaxter emailed to explain what had happened.

This happen to me and I did what it told me to do. Now my computer keeps freezing up. Is this possibly a virus? I received a notice from a friend and it warn me and everybody in her address book and I follow the instructions and deleted the teddy icon. Should I have my computer checked? I have scanned my computer with Msafee and it says I don't have a virus.

I think you are supposed to replace the file:

Microsoft has posted the article Q322993 with information on how to replace jdbgmgr.exe if you have deleted it.
