This is, I believe: "Majolica?"

It is a 12" diameter (?)reticulated flattish (?) bowl??
The back stamp looks like a crown with "NS" and then ?? "NAO"

IS THIS MINTON???????

THANK YOU ALL!

Hi,

Now I know why...

Well, Tom, at least your artist signed their plate! Is that the same signature on the back?

It's very pretty.

I think the limoges plate is worth listing. What size is it? If it's large - 12 inches or so call it a charger. If it's smaller refer to it as a cabinet plate. I couldn't make out the writing on the back. If you can make out a company name, make sure you mention it.

I'm not real good with flowers, but those look like they might be violets - which would also be worth mentioning.

I personally have never associated hand painted limoges with arts and crafts, but someone else may think differently.

By the way, both of those plates are breakable - are you sure you can handle the stress of packing them if they sell? (Just kidding)

Sorry to hear about the size, that will make it less desirable. But it's still pretty and might sell. I'll check my limoges book and see if I can find a mark that matches.

Tom, these are two seperate plates here right? Because I was going to say I've seen the Crown with the NS. It's hand-painted Italian wear -- but then I am confused because I know LIMOGES is france.

I will try to look up the NS Symbol and let you know what company it is, ok? (From what I remember its NOVO Italy, I think)

You can definetely call the fruit plate Majolica.

Tom,

It looks like you've found a rare piece of Limoges (or was it Ralphie?). I don't know if rare = expensive.

The letters are actually PM DE M. That makes it date between 1908 and 1914. It was the company of Paul Maurice Mavaleix. The book says the first letter looks like a B, but there is really just a fancy loop between the P and the M. The letters stand for Mavaleix's name.

The decorating would have been by another artist or studio.

Good luck with it.

Tom.

that doesnt look like the same mark I had on my NOVE piece. (Does it look like there are two lions beside the crown?)

This is the mark from NOVE Italy. I dont know what your plate is, but the Italian ceramics companies produced a lot of those fruit majolica plates. (Maybe yours is England, Wales, tho?? Sorry dont know...will look a little more for you.)

Cant find that mark, Tom. Maybe somebody with a Kovels or another mark identifer can tell you. Did find this though.

Might be useful to someone one day!

Tom, I think the flowers are LILACS on their branches.
Limoge company (lots of good companies) sold blank bisque peices for amature artists to paint. Sometimes they would take the work back to fire it. Some of the artists were very skilled. I really like the gold rim- talk that point up! And the scrolled monogram at about 9:00.

Lots of purple collectors out there; I'd put "purple" in the auction title if room.

I have about 20 of the small plates, all hand-painted, which I've been ruminating about for 8 years or so--family items, all very old, handpainted in the same colors so they could be a slightly unmatched set. I'd like to watch your auction, Tom; please post it here when it launches!

Lucy: Would you like me to send you the auctions for the china-painting journals? And anyone else, too, who'd be interested. I'm not going to keep them. ~Adele

Tom - can't tell from the pics if your 6" Limoges is thick or thin. Could it be a teapot stand?

Some of you expressed an interest in the 8 very old china-painting journals I'm selling this week. Here's a link to one of them, and you can view my other auctions for more. I apologize for some of the pictures--these journals were tough to photograph, for some reason. They're called "Keramic Studio," and, wonder of wonders, I see that several of them already have bids (started 3 hours ago). Yay. ~Adele

Tom, I looked and looked for Majolica. The closest I found was a set (plate that size) with lemons in the center, in relief (or raised) ... and it was on a site that sold only Majolica... they didn't mention any marks, nor Minton.

Is Harry Potter really getting that old?
