It's too bad that we can't split that hurricne into two pieces, half for the west coast and the other half for you. We could use some of that water in California. Keep your fingers crossed and hope it dies a natural death 300 miles out in the Atlantic.

It's looking very glum for us in SC! I live right on the coast, and went through Hugo - I still can hear the sound of it. I am really hoping Isabel takes a turn back out to sea and avoids all of us!

we are on the east coast of Florida, my husband is tracking this one. We had a reprieve last year and a lot of people think when one hits again it is going to be big.

liveinjeans I just said yesterday I hope it doesn't hit Charleston .All those poor people that went through HUGO...We are about 67 miles from Charleston and went to Walterboro to get away from the rising water when hugo was coming (they said Sav. Ga. or us was going to be hit) little did we know we were getting closer to where it was going.Had a small twister sit down next to my Aunts house we were in...it cut a perfect trail through the field. The front door blew open and a cat they couldn't find before it got dark come flying in.It was scary and we weren't even in Charleston. My Prayers go out to everyone ....I hope it turns North like WGM said and misses us all !

Hi Toasted!
Before the last big hurricane to hit Charleston, the families left and went to Columbia.
Most are elderly now, so I don't know what they'll do.
I will probably call my aunt...they live right on James Island..if you know where that is...and cousins on Mt Pleasant and various other locations around the city.

The powerful East Coast hurricanes ( and Midwest torndoes ) make some Californians wonder why the rest of the nations say that Californians are insane to live in earthquake country.

A few years ago I was in line at a fast food restaurant in Carpinteria in Ventura County when a tourist asked the clerk how could he live in such an area that had dangerous earthquakes. His reply was a classic -- "I'd rather go through 15 seconds of shaking than a hurricane or tornado!"

-------------- sig file ----------- President John F. Kennedy said, "There are three things which are real: God, human folly and laughter. The first two are beyond our comprehension, so we must do what we can with the third."

Having lived in tornado country & on the very fringes of a hurricane area, and now living in earthquake country...I'll take my chances with the earthquakes. There's something about being able to watch a natural disaster approaching that is just too unsettling for me--I'd rather have the surprize of an earthquake.

(Carpinteria is in Santa Barbara county)

In Raleigh, we went through Hugo, Fran, and several others. What have I learned? The best plan is to leave town until the electricity and water come back on. See ya.

I live in Wilmington NC and Bonnie, Fran and Floyd have all hit us in the last 5 years and it appears that Isabel (at this time) is heading straight towards us. Am hoping it turns North and stays out in the ocean.

parkman - hi neighbor! I am in Myrtle Beach

I just have a really funny feeling about Isabel, and sure hope I'm wrong. I am supposed to be moving into my new house next week, so I am really stressing!

Karen - I agree! I admit that I used to love sitting out on the roof watching funnel clouds and trying to figure out which ones would touch down. At the same time though, the accompanying hail damage was a pain. I get a kick out of the earthquakes. I lost my office and some of the neighboring apartment building during the Northridge quake but there is something rather awe inspriring about the earth deciding to rearrange things a bit.

Hope all of you on the east coast stay safe and undamamged. Huricanes were a little much for me.

Hi WGM...I was in Myrtle Beach yesterday at the Camping World. Maybe I should pack up that camper and head for the hills. I hope your funny feeling is wrong. I don't wish any bad luck on our northern neighbors but don't want to be selfish and have all the hurricanes here.

So far it looks like it may hit my beautiful, favorite place to vacation: the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Nooo!

Crossing fingers and praying hard that it misses the coast all together!

I have always enjoyed the weather associated with hurricanes though I've never been through a really bad one. I would consider 125+ mph winds as really bad. The two most recent significant ones in this area were Eloise and Opal if my memory serves me. Generally by the time you know they are going to hit it is too late to run. The roads clog up with cars and you are better off in your house.

When the media reports on them they usually go to the hardest hit area and take pictures from multiple angles and make it look a lot worse than it really is. And believe it or not, no electricity for a week or so is a great experience. People pitch in and help one another, you meet your neighbors and find out what community is all about.

Glad you think so! I doubt you could find anyone on the Eastern Seaboard who agrees with you.

edited for restraint - boy, could I come up with a few fluffy, fenix, or helen lines right now!

HUH?
I will gladly trade spaces with you if you think it's not that bad.

Being without electricity is fine if you don't need oxygen, emergency care, etc.

Not to mention, loss of life and property damage.

thank you, liveinjeans!

You know, that has got to be the most assenine statement I have heard - or read - in a long, long time. The poster of that statement needs to take his own advice and "getalife"

I don't think so. Being without it for 15 hours is tough enough. My stepfather has to use a breathing machine at night. My mother stayed up all night to make sure the battery backup worked while he slept. We threw away a 'fridge and freezer worth of food. One week? No, would not be a great experience.

Prayers to all of you living in the path of this storm. Being in Ohio we are supposed to feel some of it, but fortunately not enough to worry anyone.

I hope everyone involved will be safe!
Leave if you can and move westward!

Check on the elderly, so many have no transportation and may need supplies...our most neglected group!

Volunteer to get them items of necessity and refills on medications!
They would be so grateful and you'd be blessed!

I live on the Delmarva Penninsula. Right in the track of the storm. It's been raining here since Friday (thanks TS Henri). The ground is soaked and a lot of places are flooded. They are rescuing and evacuating not 15 miles from here. We have a flood watch through 5pm Tuesday. The stream in the woods behind me came up into the yard this morning. I am not looking foreward to the end of the week.

If any of you hurricane veterans have any tips, I'd appreciate it.
