I want to make a purchase that will cost me $20, and I get this note from the seller;
"The
package weight is 46 pounds and the shipping charges for UPS ground is
$40.00. So, the total cost will be $60.00."
As it happens, the item is wood. Chunks of wood. I don' t need them right away, I don't need to worry about breakage...
Anyone know of a cheaper option?

Check out some truck lines, greyhound bus etc. You should be able to do this online.
just look up freight lines.
Ups may not be that bad as far as cost goes.
package weight is 46 pounds
How big is the box? That is another factor in shipping cost as well as the weight.

The most for FedEx Ground would be $29.81 + 1.15 Home delivery if the box isn't oversize. (That would be to Zone 8.)
