I purchsed through an E-bay auction a laptop computer. I received the computer quickly after paying. I notice immediatly that there are two bad pixels on the screen one is extremly annoying to me one isn't. The auction description did not say there were any bad pixels. Also there is a white substance on part of the screen that did not come off with a damp cloth. I know not to use anything other than water on the lcd of a laptop. When I saw the bad pixel's I contacted the seller through their E-mail address. It's been over 24 hours and I have not heard back. According to the auction text there is still a 6month warranty from Compaq. I paid for this via a credit card not though pay pal, billpoint or any service like that.

First I would go back to the page on the listing and read the listing closley also follow all links off of the page and look at any web sites that may have more information on the seller if the seller states as-is then you are stuck with the product if there is any warranty on the laptop from compaq ask for the information needed to use the warranty also call compaq directly as it may still be under warranty but non transferable to another owner in this case it was a mute point to say there was any warranty at all give at least 48 hours for a reply then send a second e-mail asking for information again if no reply is recived in 24 hours then send a 3rd e-mail explaining that due to the seller being non-responsive in even trying to help with the problem you are being forced to give very storng bad feedback and put a hold on the credit card for payment then at this time challange the charge with the credit card company package up the laptop and return it to buyer insured and be sure to use a service that makes them sign for reciving the shipment at worst you are out the return shipping and you learned to read very closly and do some checking on the seller and the item being sold
I also learned this the hard way I had afew new monitors I sold, I bought them from a big name store during a closeout and they had 1 year warranties on them so I passed all of this along to the buyers of the 3 I sold 2 died after 2 to 3 months when I tried to get warranty help from the manufacture all it turned into was a runaround and getting turned down because the owner did not buy from a retail outlet leaving me holding the bag I was able to replace both of them but it took some time to do and was a big pain for the $35 profit I made off each sale
Sorry for being long winded lol.

Ahh it's ok I enjoyed your story and advice.

The seller has a rating of 1082 with a few negative but all 6 month or older. I read back over the auction text and it says it is a refurbished laptop refurbished by the seller and they say they will warranty it also. They do have a physical location in New York and since thats only one state away I can always pay them a visit

Then I would be nice and string it out a bit you have 30 days or more with most credit card companys to challenge a purchase keep trying and work things out with the seller it sounds like you are going to end up sending it back and getting another one to me

give them some time they may not get to their emails every day...looks like you should be ok but I would call the credit card company and find out what your rights are as to chargebacks just os you know

Well I heard from the seller saying he passed my E-mail on to the right people but I need to call them and gave me a toll free # to call. I called and someone said I would get a call back which I did. I'm shipping the laptop back to them (my expense of course) and they will see if they have one with a better screen on hand because the mfr won't do anything for a few bad pixels. The mfr may do something for the marks in the screen but I don't know yet. So tomorrow (well later today) off it goes Priority mail, insured, with delivery confirmation back to the seller. Thank you everyone for the advice

Seems I read an article somewhere that manufacturers LCD screens do not guarantee 100% live pixels on new laptops. I believe that they haven't got a production process yet that can consistently make 100% live pixel screens.

Are you aware that all LCD panels have a minimum dead pixel count before it's considered to be replaceable under the warranty.
A friend bought a brand new $2,000+ 21" Apple flat panel monitor from an Apple retail store here in Silicon Valley (they have stores to compete with their own dealers) and noticed 8 dead pixels near the top left corner. Apple tech support claimed that according to the warranty, the minimum dead pixels required for replacement are 10, or that 5 or more are in a group next to each other to create a black spot. These were near each other, not next to each other, so Apple wouldn't replace the LCD monitor.

I would contact the laptop manufacturer to find out what their policy is regarding dead pixels. You may be out of luck and have to live with it, even if the seller didn't specify it in the ad.

This may be the reason he sold it in the 1st place. He could claim that it wasn't there when he shipped it, so it's your word against his.

Yes I am aware there is a minimum amount of bad pixels before the mfr will allow a claim, but as I said there were also marks on the screen that they did not mention in the auction text. They (either the seller or Compaq) should repalde it for the marks because the auction did not mention marks on the screen. Also there is a problem with the laptop resetting itself. The seller is going to take it back and exchange it for me

Just an update. The seller went above and beyond what I expected. I sent the laptop back Priority Mall (my cost, not a problem with that) and it took one day to get to him. He then sent out a different unit after swapping drives to me that arrived the next day. I gave him positive feedback and would deal with him again
