I just listed this item (875506994) on eBay under "Antiques: Architectural" because I didn't know where else to put it. I thought it was a plaster mold, but the detailing is too crude for that. I now think it is a plaque of some kind. It measures 8x5 inches in size and is made of "white" metal. However, it is heavier than simple white or pot metal, making me think it has a fairly high lead content. The figure's features are very Victorian and I know that it is old. There are two embossed words in the upper right hand corner which I cannot decipher. They look like "EWER DOD" and "ASSKLAV" or "I VIER DOD" and "ASSKLAY". HELP!!!! I'd post the pic here, but I can't figure out how to do it (duh!) -- you'll have to go to the item on eBay to look at the pic. Sorry.

"vier" is "four" in german. But none of the other words translate. Could it be in Latin?
Sorry could't be more help - very interesting though.

I am abandoning my computer for three whole days. When I return on Monday, I expect an answer!

You probably listed it correctly. It looks like a plaque for a corner stone on a building. Just guessing.

I love a mystery and accidently entered "lewer dod" in the google search engine instead of "ewer dod". The first hit is a page in the Greman language but they have a translate button next to the google entry. The first photo on the page is of a German military man from WW1 and under the photo is a quote signed by a "Lewer dod as Slaw". Sounds close to the name you have.
I think the plaque was on a building in Germany. Usually bronze was used on exterior building dedication plaques and it has a heavy metal heft to it.

Thanks bidsbids!!! I also did a search on Google prior to listing and came up with nothing, although I don't think I entered "lewer dod". Strange name...

I have added your information to the item description, and given all the credit to you, of course!

I think it is Dutch. Try searching a Dutch language site.

Thanks sprtqust! I wouldn't have found anything without that accidental letter "l" in the google search. Just like discovering penicillin from mold.

Ewer dod, this is not german. now if this said ewer gott then you be on the right track.

Ewer means" your"

vier is "for" or the #4

The plaque shows a picture from the middle ages. What it does say is "your god, and for god."

"ASSKLAV" is a word for enclave.

This is what it comes across to me.

Anyway, this is the best I can come up with.
