Ebay falls short of the $100M goal? Drag the AFA thing on until they pass it? Start some new fees to make up for it? Take it out of their own pockets? (LOL--yeah right...)
Just wondering if they considered it when they came up with the idea...

Has anyone seen the running tab on afa they were going to provide? Brian said in response to a question that ebay was going to provide the option of specifying other charities for a4a sales. At first it seemed like they were trying to be nice, but it is more likely that they see united fund dissatisfaction as a major block to harvesting their billpoint quota.

There's no doubt that eBay will donate $100M. The negative PR that would come with anything less would be intolerable.
My guess (in order or probability) is that:
1) They would "stiff arm" their "partners" to donate more items, or more cash. LOL at the poor suckers who signed up for any agreement with eBay. Failure to help out would immediately result in higher license fees (get ready, AW -- they'll be coming after you now
2) They would sell some of that $1B in stock that they filed to sell & use that money to pad the numbers. That way, the stockholders would essentially be donating the additional money, not them (even though it would look that way on paper).
3) They would donate whatever is needed to make up the difference themselves. They have a good cash position & could do it if it became absolutely necessary.

where did the word "IF" come from?
It doesn't take a degree in quanitative analysis to realize that there aren't and won't be 40,000 auctions closing PER DAY with a final bid average of $25.00! Right NOW is when the people who would support this "effort" would be participating....and it A4A is having problems even HITTING 40,000 AVAILABLE auctions!! That is what it will take for 100 days to hit the A4A goal====> 40,000 CLOSED auctions PER DAY @ $25.00 bid PER AUCTION for 100 CONSECUTIVE days! Doesn't look promising!
It is painfully apparant that somebody didn't "do-the-math" on this one before committing the ebay community to Meg's PR campaign! Course, they didn't seem to care what the buyers and sellers thought either!

I posted a simple extrapolation in the boycott eBay thread. Basically, it looks like they are on target for about $25 million, which I think is on the high side, if anything.
As for selling stock so "they" (I assume you mean eBay) don't have to pay it: the stockholders are eBay. Anything that eBay pays comes out of the stockholders eventually, whether they realize it or not.

It won't matter what happens at the end of 100 days. People will have forgotten by the
time 100 days pass and Ebay will say the economy was down and make a
donation that will appear generous. They will get publicity, increased their pay service
and a tax write off. What more could they want.

They won't even be close to their goal. The A4A listing numbers are dropping. I'm guessing they will fall below 30,000 listings by the end of the week and may have a small increase over the weekend.
I also expect to see strong-arm tactics used by A4A supporters, not Ebay. I expect that non-participants will receive emails from activist supporters. I'm temporarily taking down my me page until everything is done and forgotten.

It appears eBay shot we sellers and themselves in the foot with the poorly thought out A4A promotion. Can we expect mass eBay layoffs when they realize what a disaster the 100 days was for eBay sales? They can still salvage the next 3 months, but will they?

Funny thing it -- even if this fails, no one will notice.
Just like when the the media reports that Joe Blow robbed a person, when they discover Joe Blow didn't really do it, that's not news and won't get reported.
It'd be great if ebay would correct this problem -- but now pride will have Meg sinking with her ship.
