Hello,

I'm a Hungarian seller. Every now and then I have winning bidders in the States who bid hard until they win, then they disappear for a week or two. The explanation usually sounds like this: "Sorry, I've been out of town." So I wonder what you, American eBayers, think of that. Is it a usual American custom to be out of town for weeks right after the bidding they put a lot of effort into?

Would appreciate you sharing your views with me.

I don' have it happen very often, but I have one now from Hawaii who has refused to answer my emails for the last 4 days.Iknow they are kinda laid back over there but an email is not too taxing.

Funny you should ask that, I just now got a belated paypal payment with the message, "sorry for the delay, I was out of town"! LOL!

We certainly are a mobile society, but I for one don't bid unless I am going to be at home to pay when the auction ends.

Typical winning bidder excuse but I really don't think it has anything to do with being an American.

Can't be any crazier than sellers who list items with minimal info and then state:

"Will be out of town until day after auction ends...sorry but will be unable to answer emails"

THAT statement tells me I can GET the auction listed; I can be back IN TIME to bill you; I CAN'T be bothered with questions! Please bid high so YOU can pay for MY vacation & hope there is NO misunderstandings!

A few months back, I had a bidder use the "out of town" excuse on me. I gave him some more time, and then contacted him. He was still out of town! This went on for about three months!! This guy must have one heck travel schedule. Finally I was fed up and filed NPB notice. What was the response? "I have never bid on this item, you must've made a mistake"

GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

Anywho! It was only a $1.00 item, so I whipped out a "friendly" email stating "If you have not bid on this item, then I suggest that you close your Ebay and email accounts as their security has been comprimised and someone is using them to bid and contact the sellers on your behalf. I suggest you start looking for the culprit right in you own home. Best Wishes, XXXX"

Never heard from him again.

Sorry, this wasn't a helpful response, but I wanted to share.

As to your question, I know that certainly isn't my way, and other than this bidder, I haven't had a problem. I hope your luck changes.

i'm american, and it's not something i'd do. but i did just have a buyer reply to my end of auction notice that she'd try to send out a money order in the morning, but she's going on vacation and will probably send payment when she returns. (whenever that might be; she didn't say.)

edited to add: this was also a bidder who bid hard to get the item. go figure, eh?

Actually, it's a long standing American tradition to buy something then either disappear on vacation, instantly have a relative die or have their computer crash.

It's an American thing.

Some people do travel a lot and may be away from their computer for a few days. Frankly, most people are just too lazy to reply to their email.

I don't believe ANY excuses anymore as I really don't have time to validate their truthfulness. People follow directions and pay in a timely manner or they don't.

It means, I wanted your item really bad but I don't get paid for a week and a half and can't afford to send you the money until then.

So, I'm on vacation (from the bills anyway)

Is it a usual American custom to be out of town for weeks right after the bidding they put a lot of effort into?

This custom seems to be preverlent with people who buy on-line! These people are so busy they do not have time to go to stores to fill their needs so they turn to on-line venures to fulfill their needs. They then have to get payment to you and have very busy lives so the payment takes low priority
and you get the payment when they get a -round-to-it. I personaly have had this excuse or the full schudle
excuse from buyers in the U.S.A. and outside the U.S.A.!
Paying is not as high priority as winning the bid, they also may be away and on line while traveling but not able to pay for a win till they get to the home location.
I have found that a gentle reminder or is it lost in the mail? e-mail usually works well and has the desired results of payment being sent.
Like you I wonder why this happens over and over but it does and sometimes they have used a BIN too! Accept this and and send a frendily reminder after 5 or 7 days and you will find that payments will trickle in after that.
