Hello,

Thank you for writing to eBay to let us know you experienced some
trouble using parts of our site.

eBay engineers took the site down at 17:10 PDT 10/15/00 to perform some
system tuning on one of eBay's database servers. The downtime was
expected to last 10 minutes.

Difficulties in performing the tuning led to us deciding to switch over
to our hot backup system. The eBay site was again available at 17:50 PDT
10/15/00.

Auctions were not extended since the site was not down for 2 hours as
per our System Outage policy, located at:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/community/png-extn.html

I apologize for this incident and thank you for your patience.

Regards,

Ron S. C.

So they decided to "tune" the system on one of the busiest bidding nights of the week?

They couldn't wait until, say, midnight PST?

If Val started pulling out the toolkit to "tune" the pickup shortly before we were due at the airport, I'd seriously consider petitioning to be made her guardian ad litem.

TOTALLY INADEQUATE EBAY EXPLANATION & RESPONSE:

They took the system down, they were the ones who screwed around with folk's auctions. What a candy-ass response from them!

Every auction that ended during THEIR outage should either receive FVF credits or be extended. Period, no discussion.

If the system outage had originated outside of eBay, it would be different, but EBAY was responsible for this -- bunch of shirkers, if my auction had been affected (luckily wasn't) and I read this explanation from them, I would be requesting a FVF credit as fast as I could.

You know, what I hate more than anything from corporate bureaucrats is mealy-mouth rationalizations, and this one is right up there.

Whoever from eBay is reading this -- for blathersake, do the right thing!!!!

Well, at least eBay is being blatantly honest for once!

Of course, anyone who wishes to apply for a refund can - it isn't going to happen automatically. Just think of the stockholders!!

Dear ebay,
It doesn't matter if the outage was 1 minute, 10 minutes, or 100 minutes. The time you picked to do whatever it was you did was totally irresponsible. I lost BIG MONEY last night and you won't even refund the auction fees. But unlike ebay, I will do the RIGHT THING by my customers and honor all winning bids. An another thing....why do I have to search around your site for 45 minutes to find a way to send you an e-mail?
