I have had a few buyers tell me they never received their purchase. So far I've replaced 4 uninsured items due to lost mail, even though I state my insurance/replacement policy in my WBN.

Most all my bidders choose not to insure since the items are worth less than $12.00, but I replaced these items to these people with decent feedbacks and I was given no indication that there was any misgivings.

Only $50 bucks spent on lost mail but it's adding up.

Tonight I get a message stating the bidder never received their package. USPS 1st class should have arrived 5 days ago. Somewhat late.

Checking their feedback they have 2 pos and 2 negs. Iffy at best. So I tell them I'll start a trace and for them to give it a few more days.

So how do you good people handle uninsured lost mail? Do I reply to them saying that I can't guarantee replacements to them unless they choose to insure and take the neg? Would you base your replacements on buyer feedback or just "gut" instincs?

Inquiring minds need to know.

I use DC, which means I ship Priority or Parcel Post, and build the charges into my shipping costs. If I were you and you don't want to use DC, I'd do the same with insurance. No choices for bidder on this one.

I send everything Priority Mail which is the only way to get delivery confirmation for $.35. I state the shipping charges in the auction and if they don't want to pay it, they don't have to bid. Maybe I lost a few bidders, but I haven't lost any packages.

90% of "Lost" mail is actually lost at the buyers location. If an item is truely lost the post office will notify you eventually. I have had 4 items that were delivered (I use DC's) that were not "received" by buyer. I do not tell my buyers that I confirm the shipments. All of the buyers have located their packages after being told that the PO has a record of delivery...

Absolutely every auction I run states shipping is by USPS Priority with confirmation. I had a winning bidder sarcastically remark on this $3.55 shipping cost that wow, am I sure that is enough postage to ship this small spoon, (item was won for only 4.99) but I insisted that this is my routine way of shipping, I pointed out to the winner that if they had a question about it they should have e-mailed me before they bid, and they finally acceded. Confirmation for only .35 is a great deal IMO.

I have twice refunded money and then had the item show up, once, two months after I mailed it. These were both sent from here in Ohio to two different of the 48 States.
Also, i have a friend who bought something to do with nascar, she got it finally, last week, and it was mailed in MAY !!!
Why did they get rid of pony express??

My items run in the 15-70 dollar range. I have very few buyers who won't pay for insurance. If they don't - I get it anyway, cheap enough to cover. Never had a problem with "non-delivery".

Hi everybody.

Shaeun, I like your technique regarding delivery confirmation. But is delivery confirmation only available for Priority Mail? I send almost everything by 1st
Class mail, unless the item exceeds 13
onces or so. For my items, continuously
going with Priority would not be worth it and would probably reduce the bids I get. Lately, I've had quite a few buyers say they didn't receive their item, under suspicious circumstances/feedback for some of them.
I insure everything with u-pic.com, but have been paying for these missing items out of my
pocket because I don't want my u-pic rates to
increase. But in the past two or so weeks I've really been taking a financial hit from these items that weren't received.

Thanks for reading my post.

BlackJack -
I make it clear in my TOS and EOA mail that I will not accept responsibility for lost or damaged packages and recommend that the buyer pay for insurance if the item is that important to them.

Tell your "it's lost in the mail" people to file a "lost mail" form at their end and see what happens. Often it's sitting behind the sorting machine or was sent to the wrong PO.
