Maybe this will cut down on the number of deadbeats and bid retractions as it will require both bidders and sellers to list a
credit card with eBay effective 1/22/2k

There is more information at the listed URL

Beginning October 22, 1999, all new sellers on eBay are required to place a credit card or a debit
card with the Visa or MasterCard logo on file with eBay, or go through another form of verification
before listing their first item.

I don't see anything about bidders having to give Credit Card info. Am I missing something?

If I've bought on eBay, but never sold, will I be required to place a credit card on file?

Yes, you will be required to place a credit card on file if you've bid, but never sold. We realize
that there are many long-time bidders on eBay that have tremendous feedback ratings and
would most likely be good sellers. But we decided that the requirements for selling should be
consistent. Therefore, we decided that if you haven't sold in the past, you would be required to
place a credit card on file.

The one who started this thread has apparently NOT REALIZED that this 'news' is one year old.

Nothing has changed.

It is still only if you are selling. If you solely buy no you don't have to a credit card and that went into effect on 10/22"99".

I realize it's old news, but the date is fast approaching and this may be a blessing to
all sellers and bidders alike.

Not everyone is aware of the requirement, so I though I would list it.

The date is fast approaching? It came and went almost a year ago.

The anniversary is fast approaching, and it applies to sellers (and bidders who want to start selling).

Maybe on the first anniversary eBay will remember to implement it.

Implement what? If you have been a buyer only, and you want to begin selling, you have to list a CC. To (only) buy, you don't need one.

Am I missing something here?

That's not the way I read it.

I have my Discover Card on file on eBay. Does this mean I have to apply for a Visa by 10/22?

What about those folks with American Express? Tell me the truth!!

I just stumbled upon a new auction site. It's www.goldsauction.com. Looks like a winner. I predict it will put ebay out of business by the end of 1999.

The PREVIOUS policy grandfathered ALL members as sellers if they had signed up before the deadline. What this does is make sure ALL sellers have been identified as a real person, or at least a valid CC.

MEMO TO SELF: start an auction with EVERY ID you have before the deadline to squeak under the closing portcullis!

MEMO TO SELF: Look up the word "portcullis" in the dictionary.
