Sucks big time. Byte me Ebay....All I can say is this is the biggest fraud of them all - committed by Ebay themselves. I will never go to ebay again if this is required.
Here's why. Last winter my girlfriend was stalked and almosted raped by some jerk off bidder who was bidding on one of her items. He emailed her a few times regarding the items. He ended up not being the high bidder, but took big advantage of Ebay's LOOSE privacy policy of showing the name, address, and phone number of my girlfriend. He traveled here and was bothering her and finally attempted to rape her when she came home. He was caught and is now in jail. She is ok. If he had been successful, we would have sued Ebay for mega zillions. Interestingly enough soon after we notified EBay of our decision to possibly litigate, they pulled the street address data from all accounts. Now this lastest fiasco of telling people to phone their buyers before bidding or paying is pure *&*(_. Anyone can look up an address from a phone number if they want to pay a private eye the $10. My girlfriend was terrified and got an unlisted number. For Ebay to require people to give out there unlisted numbers to total strangers (possibly criminals) is so far out of the galaxy I can't see it. We should all ban together and boycott Ebay. There are other auctions out there as well as classified ads. Ebay has proven themselves to be driven by money and not the safety of its members. They are so concerned about fraud that they don't even think about the human life that could be lost by their deraged way of thinking. In fact, if someone does die or get mamed, I will personally sue Ebay on their behalf. Don't let Ebay get away with this people - protect our privacy!

Well, mmz, I'm not too happy about it either. I think that the bidders ought to call eBay for information - not us. I really don't need a telephone call at 3:00am by some potential bidder for a $5 item who hasn't bothered to go read my feedback profile and figure it out. If my feedback profile isn't good enough for a bidder and they can't e-mail me for information, I suggest that they just move on.

Whether eBay shares your address and phone number or not, I don't see how you can trade without giving up some privacy. Unless all sellers and buyers are willing to leave payment and merchandise under a designated rock they've both agreed on the issue of addresses is a moot one.

Well, as for me its all a moot point as my address and phone number are in every one of my auction listings anyway.

mmz, when did this happen? I've been on ebay since late 1998 and addresses were never on the contact info. Perhaps someone who's been around longer, can shed some light on this?
Not to belittle your G/F's situation any, but anytime you're online and you're involving yourself with countless people....... you're increasing the odds of running into someone who is offbase. If people could remain anonymous than there's not as much concern... however there is no way that a seller or buyer can remain anonymous. At some point, they have to give out information to receive payment or product. This is one of the risks of being online.. and it's a risk of being in business. This risk has to be assumed when you sign up for ebay, either to sell or to buy. This same risk is assumed when you list things on any other auction site, or place a classified ad someplace. Eventually, you have to give someone your personal information . There's just no way around it.
There is no such thing as "privacy" when you want to be public in order to make money.

I like ebay, it's been very good for a little pocket change.
But, I have always been outspoken with them and others about their lack of securing private (or what should be private) personal information. Sorry to hear about the unfortunate mishap with "mmz". I, too, was stalked (of sorts) by someone who insisted they be allowed to come over to my residence and view the item before bidding. How outrageous! Several emails later, this jerk just would not take no for an answer. And where did he get the information? From Ebay. Yes, the information received by the requestor is incomplete, but does not take any time or pain to fill in the missing information. Ebay insists that this is part of the user agreement, but if all is not private, why the heck have USER ID's?
And now...they suggest (and it is posted on their site) that a buyer should call the seller before bidding. And there is still a purpose for feedback?
With the lack of security and stupid inconsiderate suggestions by ebay, I have a feeling my days on ebay are numbered. Just as strongly, I have a feeling Ebay's days are numbered with such loose policies in regards to safeguarding personal information. It is only a matter of time before additional crimes are committed with information provided by ebay. Once proven that the crime was facilitated with such information and ebay is found liable, then perhaps they will tighten up and get real about security.

Rosiebud ..... Street addys used to be included in the Contact Info up until early 97 I believe? The understanding I had was that they were pulled after a disgruntled bidder went to a sellers house & opened a can of whup ass on em.

Pulling the street address data won't help much. If you have someone's phone number (and the number is listed), you can easily look up their street address in a reverse directory. Several are available on the internet.

I believe ebay retracted their encoruagement for bidders to calll prior to bidding (on AB BOARD) and also in the results from survery to send phoen number in end of auction notice (see townsquare) that also resulted in their statement that it would not be practical idea to do so. Many people responded to that survery

If I remember right, a robot was used to collect email addresses. The address was used to requesst pvt info in one shot.
My user info was one of them. They then went to the user Id. & dropping the address in pvt info, after a large Protest from users.
Reddeer, I think the whup ass occured during the days of the old eBay posse. One posse member picked on the wrong Cat. I'm sure that a many whup ass has occured since then.

macandjan~I work at home and my husband cannot figure out why I don't leap to answer the phone everytime it rings. I have an answering machine for that, thank you. It drives me nuts. I can return a days worth of phone calls in a few minutes but when I answer every call it breaks my routine and concentration.
I was expecting a call from him this am, so I was picking up every call. In one hour 5 telemarketers. I hate them wasting my time. Now I pretend to be my minor son so I don't have to listen to all this hoorah!
Husband also just got digital with unlimited long distance. We would save a bundle of we just got rid of the land lines. And also wouldn't have these computers dialing us up for telemarketing. However we use our fax alot......any suggestions?
Son just got a wireless phone that connects to the net.. .... It is way COOL!

By the way,
I am having a dispute with a seller over the condition of nine items listed in a lot. I asked permission to return them. It was granted. They returned most of the items to me and charged me for the priviledge.
Since then I have been getting sexually harassing emails from the seller. I filed fraud reports on him but he uses an employees addy to sell from. I also reported his ISP but they did nothing (AOL).
Reported him to safeharbor with headers, they do nothing.
The guy IS psycho and DOES scare me. I do have a very nice Lady Browning 380 for when my hubby & son are away.It is loaded with hydroshock. However rather than deal with this jerk, I filed insurance. Ebay said let Lloyd's handle it.

"However rather than deal with this jerk, I filed insurance. Ebay said let Lloyd's handle it."
The one and only time that I filed a claim with ebay's Lloyd's it was lost in the ether. Only $55.00 worth, but they wouldn't help me track it down at all. And it was my first buy on ebay too!
Shosh-
Full moon just passed. Must be in the water!

They use to have all of our info street address and all......... They removed it either in 97 or 98 can't remember and also put a change where we could have a username.
Had to do with spammers being able to get our email address and user info to send us unsolicited snail and email mail.
Even if there were such a thing as not putting all our info anyone with a bit of savy can from just an email address go in thru the back doors and find that persons real email address, full name, home address and phone #.
Anyway the internet is PUBLIC not private. So anytime we are in public there are risks of us being there IN PUBLIC.
