'Shipping to Canada doubled'

And in Canada we have the exact same problem. To mail for example a cup & saucer to anywhere in the US it costs US$8.00

To mail that same parcel 10 miles away from here costs US$10.50. To mail from Western Canada to Eastern Canada will be US$$11.00-$12.00.

We only quote Shipping costs to the US in our auctions as we can use a Flat Rate. We ask Canadians to ask for a Shipping quote as it depends on their Postal Code ( like your Zip) and we also have Fuel Surcharges plus GST ( Good & Services Tax) of 7% on top of the postage when we mail within Canada.

We are in Western Canada and receive many shipping quote requests from Ontario. We send the quote and know that they won't bid...and they don't ...and I don't blame them!

If I am wrong on this then Amber step in here but I think I have all the facts straight.

Yes, you are quite right otteropp. If I get a request for shipping rate for province other than Ont. I know there will be no bid because there is a minimum cost to every province, and it's much too high. We need a "small package rate" here.

I am perplexed at this statement unless Stone cold is from Canada? It cost $4.05 priority mail to send a one pound package to anywhere in the US including Alaska and Hawaii and APO/FPO yet that same package and that same package to Canada was $9.50. I never could ship cheaper to Canada than the US and I dont understand that post?

Granted the shipping has not gone up in years for international so now the same 1 lb package will cost $4.60 to ship anywhere in the US and $16.00 to Canada. BIG JUMP.

My original question then: given increases, dutities etc. etc from various shippers, is it still better to USPS to Canada then switch to UPS to canada?

ATC

Not sure where you are getting your figures, but they are way off.

1 pound priority to the USA. $4.05

1 Pound Air Mail to Canada. $3.95.

At the present time, Canada is cheaper.

We ship only priority to Canada so 1 lb priority to Canada is $8.50 and double that of the US. WE do not ship Airmail first class mail, only priority.

Stone, Airmail to Canada currently equates to First Class in US, 63 cents for first ounce versus 39 cents - not priority. Air mail is currently assumed for US first class mailings, where appropriate.

ATCOutfitters...to answer your question I can only speak for myself but I won't buy from a US Seller who only uses UPS.

I always prefer items to be sent via the Post Office Services..USPS to Canada Post & to my home.

I just bought three items last night from a Seller in Florida and the postage is US$15.00 and the three items totalled $15.93. I don't believe his postage is wrong as he is a great Seller but I am definitely going to be scaling back my buying on EBay both from Canada and the US due to postage rates.

From my point of view as a Seller I guess your Postal increases will make our shipping costs look more reasonable! OUCH!

Thanks Otteropp for the info and I think I will stick with USPS even though rates are going up. Yes, we could ship at the rates you quoted but not next week. If it cost 15.93 this week it will cost $22-23 or more next week! Under 2 lbs is now $17.30 and it was 11.50 - guess it depends upon the items. Some of my customers tell me that even with that they still consider it a bargain and often it is items they cant get in Canada or other countries. So the old supply and demand law will take effect I guess. No one likes $3 a gallon gas, yet they still buy it! Just wish USPS would have done an interim raising of rates instead of waiting all these years. It would have been easier on everyone. Post office also told me that if they are raising their rates that the other carriers may also because USPS uses their planes -- actually the other carriers dont raise the rates but put a fuel surcharge on everything--same effect. Thanks for your input.

I think you are making the right decision to stick with USPS.
I also agree that if there is something I really want that I cannot get any other way then I will buy no matter what the postage ( almost....!) There is a brand of lipstick that is not sold in Canada and I would definitely buy. Ah...what price vanity!

Our Postal Rates do go up each year, usually in January, so it is less of a shock to us as we have come to expect the yearly increases. We have also been paying a Fuel Surcharge for about 3 years now.
Initially it may be hard but as folks get used to it things will drift back to normal.

Thank you for raising such an interesting topic.

Oh no it don't. US first class compares to international surface.

From Wikipedia

In the United States, domestic airmail long carried a higher rate, but in 1975 the United States Postal Service eliminated domestic air mail rates, deciding (coincident with the rise in the one-ounce first class domestic rate from ten to thirteen cents) that all domestic first class mail would be delivered by the speediest method of transportation.

Not a real good source, but it says nothing about international. All it is stating that domestic airmail will be eliminated. Next time find a more credible source other than wikipedia.

Edited to add: Not to disrespect you, Stone, but numerous postal history sources point to 1975 as the point where US first class mail was best sent by the fastest method possible. Domestic air mail was eliminated at that date and fees increased. First class mail has been downplayed in recent years by the USPS pushing priority and express mail options. Still, the greatest bulk of first class mail > 200 miles goes by air.
