Pfft! It's no big deal...buyers are too dumb to read feedback much less a rating.
So mingopig, you must do a lot of buying on eBay then.

I don't like ANY rating system that doesn't work equally for buyers and sellers. Period. Let us know WHO left those ratings and let us leave our own ratings for them. Otherwise, this is terribly one-sided.
So am I to understand that this "new system" is in addition to the regular positive, neutral, and negative system?? They'll still be using the old system too?
I agree 100% about the shipping time item in the new system. People will NOT understand it.

Well... I've already got 23 of the new ratings, and less than thrilled with them.
Take "Communication" for example:
I send invoice's out within 24 hours of the auction close (usually much faster... within minutes for many, but none longer than 24 hours). Plus, I respond to all email within 24 hours (again, usually much faster). Despite that... I've got a 4.5 communication rating. Makes you wonder where I'm losing the .5 from...

I hate it! I don't have ten new ratings so I can't complain about that part yet but I hate the rest.
I used to make fun of the sellers who listed the item sold in response to any feedback received and now I'm one of them.

A couple of insights from other industries. When a customer's experience is average or "what they expect," they will tend to give 3s and 4s on a 1-5 rating system. There was nothing wrong with their experience and in their mind, they are rating it as a "good" experience.
It is when you provide them with something extra, special, out of the ordinary, that they are more willing to give the 5. So you could consider this an opportunity to set yourself apart from the crowd by providing the customer with that "something extra" that provides you with your competitive advantage.
Some hospitals have taken to educating their patients about their satisfaction ratings and asking for the 5. You can do that as well in your communications to your customers.
"Dear Customer,
It is our goal to provide you with 5-star service at every step of this transaction. If at any point you feel we have fallen short of deserving a "5", please contact us so that we can attempt to correct the problem and improve our service for all our customers."
You can use your end-of-auction communications to educate your customers about the new feedback scores, how you will perform on each parameter to deserve a "5" and request they contact you if they feel you have fallen short of the goal. You can use this again to point out your competitive advantage on each parameter and to educate your customers about "shipping and handling" charges, time in transit, etc.
Be proactive about this in your communications with your customers and you have an opportunity to score more 5s than your competitors who are biting their nails and worrying.

fleecies,
Excellent suggestions. That's the type of stuff eBay should be including in their instructions to bidders on the new feedback system. Speaking of which... does anyone have any idea what the bidders see as far as instructions go for the detailed feedback section? Just curious...

okay... I just answered my own question by going in to leave feedback for an old auction I won... Here's what bidders see:
To give buyers the opportunity to provide more details about their trading experiences, we're introducing detailed seller ratings.
In addition to leaving an overall Feedback rating for each transaction, buyers can rate sellers on the accuracy of the item description, communication, dispatch time, and postage and packing charges. Learn about our new detailed seller ratings.
There's also a link to this page:
http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/feedback/contextual/leaving-detailed-seller-ratings.html
Not great... but at least it points out some issues (to those bidders that actually read it)

Okay more info... if you rate the item as 1 or 2 stars for item description accuracy, you also get asked the following questions:
We'd like to understand better why you rated the item description low. Was the item:
Counterfeit, replica, or an unauthorised copy
Damaged
Wrong item
Other
This information will not be shared with the seller or other eBay members.
Interesting... yet disturbing that eBay is letting bidders report these issues, yet not sharing the information with the seller. I would think that the seller would WANT to be notified if it was damaged or the wrong item... and I'm not confident that bidders are knowledgeable enough to correctly identify items as conterfeit, replica's or unauthorized (note ebay's misspelling) copies.

The spelling of "unauthorised" is the English version of our unauthorized. They must be using the same information as the U.K.

I wonder if the next step in the process is encouraging the dissatisfied buyer to follow through with a SNAD or other report?
Edited cause I can't spell.

I just checked out about a dozen of the top sellers. Seems the average is about 4.5 for item description/communication/shipping time, and about 4.0 for shipping cost.
I wonder if buyers will pay more attention to the star ratings, instead of the feedback percentages?

Well...it had to happen. Just what we have been talking about! I am trying not to be angry...but I am!
For the first time this afternoon my 'STARS' show.
On Shipping time I have 4.5 ( I guess).
My latest Feedback is from a Buyer who gave me a Positive but said.
'Thanks, Nice dish but took one month'
I am in Canada, she is in Hawaii. The purchase was from my Store and she she purchased on the morning of April 4th. We mailed the parcel on the AFTERNOON of April 4th. She paid for Surface Mail.
I sent an email confirming shipping with her about 1 hour after the purchase and told her that our recent experience showed that Surface to Hawaii was taking up to one month.
What more could I have done! GRRRR....
Now why can't I give HER a rating...stupid EBay!

man am I bummed!
Looks like they are still working out glitches!

otteropp: That is the thing I am most concerned about. Mailing from Canada is often slower. I always tell my buyers roughly how long the package will take, I think I am going to extend that window so that the buyers are prepared. We mail every day, but there is NOTHING we can do about the time it takes for delivery, especially when Canada Post takes longer holidays than most post offices, and you have to take delays at customs into the mix.
I have tried to find out about the ratings. Your 4.5 for example, is that just what the last buyer gave, is it accumulative? If the next buyer gives a 5 on shipping will it go up to 5?

My 4.5 was on Shipping Time. I guess I should apologise for taking three hours to ship the darn parcel after she bought it!
Amber I have no idea whether the Stars can go up. The majority of the Feedbacks that I get comment on our Fast shipping time so maybe it will creep up.
OR...Maybe it will be like the one negative that we got way back in I believe it was Dec 2003 or 2004 ( again Shipping Time related to Arizona)..even after many many more Feedbacks we are still at 99.9%.
I had thought that if I went and ate some dinner I would calm down a little...NOPE...still mad.
How can EBay expect us to swallow this malarkey without an opportunity to respond in kind?

Otteropp: Your posting demonstrating why we don't like the new system should be sent everywhere--eBay message boards, etc. It's a perfect example of how bad that shipping category is.

I have been thinking of doing that but this is about the only place I feel free to vent my disgust! Those EBay Boards seem to attract some pretty nasty people! There seems to be no-one at EBay to direct my comments to...they send a canned reply and take no notice anyway so what do we do???
At this point with only 10 Buyers giving the 'Star Ratings' and my last REAL feedback reading as it did, it was easy for me to see who it came from but just think when we have lots of 'stars' we won't be able to tell as they are all anonymous!
I was zeroing in on just the Shipping Time at 4.5 but now I notice that I only have 4.8 on the Shipping Costs too. I checked my last 15 proper feedbacks and there are nothing but compliments so this one must have also marked me as charging high shipping...I guess she thought that $8.00 was far too much to ship a large silver basket to Hawaii.
I will probably get over this by tomorrow.....but how unfair!

I agree about the eBay boards. There are a couple who come in and accuse the rest of whining, very nasty, and a couple of posters who consistently defend eBay at every step. I asked one if he was a shill for eBay; he didn't like that. But in every thread he does the same thing.
And Vendio boards are one of only two sites which send replies to one of my posts into my e-mail. So handy; wish other boards would do that.

New system blows. I don't like the idea of stalkers seeing what I bought at a glance through my buyer ID. I hate the idea of people seeing what the last gizmo sold for (at a glance) before they bid. Gives the competitor an edge too. It screwed up my system (tactic) for auctioning too. And now sellers are "graded"!? What a waste of time.. Who has all this time? I don't leave feedback for people who sell and I won't leave it for my buyers unless they ask or leave me feedback.

How about stars for buyers:
Speed of payment
Courtesy
Ability to read above the second grade level
Patience
Deciding to rewrite your TOS to suit their needs
Cleanliness
Godliness
Oh wait, that is something else.

I dont mind being rated if the bids are high in $$.
I can use the money to buy better boxes and shipping supply, hire a person to pack and ship promptly and leave them glowing feedback.
Who do they think they are rating?Tifanny?Neiman Marcus? or Bloomingdale?
They know damn well why they are buying on Ebay,BECAUSE THEY ARE TOO CHEAP TO BUY IN STORE!

I am really fed up with the new system. I am finding that the feedback comments are excellent, but for some reason buyers are giving less than the 5.0 rating, and my numbers are going down and down. If the feedbacks go up one at a time, I can tell who gave the lower ratings, and I am tempted to ask why. One even gave me lower on communication. I don't think there will be anyone who communicates more than I do.
