I know people that will not drive thru Utah but never met one that will not ship there.

Gotta love this sellers terms.....

No shipping to Utah EVER! Due to problems I have had in the past, I will NOT sell to any Utah customer. If you want the item shipped to Utah or you live in UTAH DO NOT BID!

Oh yeah... I don't think they like filling out forms either.

Shipping is to the United States only. I will NEVER! ship anywhere that requires a customs form. So if you require a customs form DO NOT BID!.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

I would write the guy and ask him what happened in Utah that he won't ship there, I am kind of curious! Maybe there is a warrant out for him due to polygamy or something like that.

From someone who lived in Utah for 21 years (until 4 years ago), I can say that there is a ton of bitterness toward the ruling religious class in that state, from the "gentiles" who have to dwell among them. Utah has been called, and rightly so, by sociologists and others a third-world country, with its still-burgeoning birthrate and parochial attitudes toward outsiders. (Some cities are okay to live in (maybe 3 or 4) for "gentiles"--Park City, Springdale, even Salt Lake City. We used to say that the state might as well just erect a 20-foot wall around it.

Loved the scenery, loved the friends we left behind, but don't miss having to look over our shoulders when we ordered a glass of wine with dinner. I also don't miss what that religion does to its women, how it treats them as second-class citizens.

Classic: Nope, never went. Never had to. I lived there.

Technically the ruling church frowns on polygamy but deep down I think they all wish the church could go back to the old ways. Not all wives are young girls there--but typically a good Mormon girl (not the polygamists) will go to college (BYU) for 2 years while her man is on his mission, and marry him when he steps off the plane, often not finishing college while the guy does. An old maid is a Mormon girl who's 23. A weird married woman is a woman who hasn't had a couple of kids in the first 2 years of marriage. Some Mormons felt sorry for us because we "just had the three."

There are exceptions, and some of our friends were those exceptions--friends who'd lived in, say, Germany for a few years and came to love beer. Friends who came to our parties even if they didn't drink--and friends who came and DID. The women had finished college and had no more than 2 or 3 kids, usually.

But if you're in the public eye in that state, as we were in spades, you lower your voice when speaking of "the church," and you look around the restaurant before ordering wine with dinner. You also don't go barefoot in the summer. Uh-uh. Not nice.

California was a very freeing move for us. At last I can frump around in my small mountain town, not care if I have makeup on, and SPEAK MY OWN MIND. I am Hunk-Ra, from the Doonesbury comic strip, with a forked tongue, flames shooting from my mouth. Love it!

Yep, Parklane. That was me, speaking my mind in a not-so-girly way. When we moved, I told my husband and friends to watch out--I was unleashed.

I lived there for 7 years (military wife) and had all three of my kids there. With 80% of the population (in large cities -- higher percentage in the small) it really is a different culture.

Luckily we only had to live off base for one year. Everyone around us seemed to be mormon as there were a lot of civilian employees on the base.

I went on a job interview once and was asked more then once what church I went to. I was told because I had young children I should be at home with them and not out looking for a job.

One of my brothers should be living in Utah, if you get my meaning. We never see eye-to-eye and barely speak at all. He is so far to the right that he's teetering on the edge. Thinks the poor deserve what they have and that I've wasted my God given talents for working with them. Have you read their Bible? I wouldn't even call it that. Instead of giving credit for the money and material goods he has to years of hard work, he gives the credit to that church. He's nuts.

As far as selling anything to anyone in Utah, I've never had a bidder from there.

Maybe he doesn't want to deal with the sales tax (or don't they have sales tax there?)

If could well be that the seller (in Utah) doesn't want others to know he's buying at the auctions I used to go to, for resale. He might also not want to get into the hassle of people wanting delivery of the item or wanting to pick it up at his home. The buyers will know who he is and where he lives, etc. Could be lots of reasons.

My husband hired high-level college administrators, and it was amazing that so many of them put their various church assignments and activities on their resumes as qualifications for the administrative jobs. Also, boy scouting is very big there; people were surprised that our son wasn't in scouting. Getting your eagle scout designation is one of the many qualifiers for rising high in the church hierarchy. Those of us who lived there could write more than one book about the experience. It wasn't all bad, but the judgmental aspects from "pure" people were hard to take.

As I said before, we loved the scenery and the simpler way of life, loved our "gentile" and "jack mormon" friends, and loved finally getting away from the judgmental attitudes.

If you're a "gentile" and have to move to Utah, do not choose any of the smaller towns except for Springdale or Park City. The smaller the town, the more pressure there is on the family. I've known of gentile business owners whose businesses never thrived because they weren't among the chosen. It's very sad, really. The state is gorgeous.

Greetings from Utah!

For those of you who are still working in any professional field, I can certainly appreciate your reservations about life in Utah. The state does have a 'culture' of its own, and as part of it you are "acceptable" for responsible (and decent wages) employment positions if you are a contributing member of your assigned ward.

However, for those of us who are retired, not Mormon and not burdened with any particular religious bias, it is a wonderful place to live! Our neighbors (Mormon, Jack and Non) are most helpful and friendly, the scenery is outstanding and, fortunately for us 'transplanted Californians', Nevada is only an hour's drive for a nice dinner, including drinks, smoking and entertainment, if one so desires.

Southwestern Utah, thanks to many retirees from California, Texas and elsewhere, is outgrowing much of its 'Mormon' controls. New influences, more open ideas and broader concepts have brought major changes in the 15+ years I've been here.

After many years in the Silicon Valley (California), we now live in a small settlement of 250 folks (mostly Mormon), love the open spaces and freedom from 'big city' regulations, crime and traffic. For us, this is a bit of Heaven. Never again will we live in the crowded environment and anonymity of city life.

Pat...

I was browsing auctions one time for breast cancer totes and someone had that they don't ship to...Iowa or something? No it was Idaho. They said if you are from Idaho do not bid!

Why would that be??

It's probably a sales tax issue. I know that if someone in Ohio buys from me, I charge sales tax. Maybe the seller doesn't want to deal with reporting sales tax to Utah since that's where he lives. Same with Idaho. Most states are beginning to crack down on the tax issue.

Edited to add: Or maybe the guy with the Idaho issue doesn't like potatoes.
