Glad it worked out for you. If it didn't, I would have filed a mail fraud complaint with the USPS - I did this once with a customer, and as soon as they got a letter that they were being investigated for mail fraud and could face jail time, I got my money back real quick.

There's something I've never been clear on.

Are mail carriers allowed to leave PM packages on someone's porch if they're not home?

Here in NYC, the mailman will leave a notice. They wouldn't leave a package at your door - not in an apartment building in NYC.

But what about other parts of the country?

Yes.

Signature confirmation and Express are the two main ones the they cannot leave at the door, but PM, DC, parcel post, and first class all can be left.

Stonecold,

Thanks for the info.

I always sort of suspected that what was true for NYC might not be true in other parts of the country.

I think it depends on if you live in a house, condo or apartment and possibly your personal relationship with your mail carrier.

When we lived in the Condo if they could leave it inside the screen door (bottom panel was covered) so that it was not apparent that there WAS a package left - they would leave it. If it wouldn't fit inside the door, they would leave a "tried to deliver" slip.

I argued with FedEx and UPS time after time that it was OK to just LEAVE the packages but they wouldn't until I signed a release.

The mail carrier knew me and would just leave them.
