::When should they have realized the blood may have been tainted with AIDS?::

You are right. It was not until 83 that that anyone was able to trace transmission to blood supplies and not until 84 that anyone actually came up with a method of testing the blood supply and even at that point organizations like the Red Cross were scoffing at the concept of testing the entire supply of of the antion because of what they believed to be prohibitive costs.

If you want to see or read a good timeline of the identification and early battles to bring mainstream medicine into the fight you should check out "And the Band Played On." It is the story of the Drs involved in the original battles and research into the disease.

Yes but [b]read the book[/], don't watch the movie. It is an excellent chronicle of how AIDS was brought in and transmitted initially in the gay bath houses and gay bars then into the heterosexual population.

Fenix, long before the flight attendant, there were people in Africa with the disease, which is suspected of having come from the bite of an infected chimpanzee. They even think this virus might have been around as early as the 1930's.

KD is right, fenix. The airline attendant is blamed for starting the epidemic here. However, the disease has been in Africa longer. The attendant had to get it from someone else. They may never know its true origin or when it first started. From what I understand, they know that monkeys carry the virus but are unaffected by it. There was talk some time ago (maybe they are still talking about it) about finding the reason that monkeys are unaffected and hopefully this would lead to a vaccine. Anyone know whatever happened to that idea?

Colin, if you want to get into a pissing match about gays, start your own thread.

Colin, the original HIV virus infection, from what I've heard, came from a diseased primate and had nothing to do with gays.::

Not a pissing match. What bother me so is that AIDS was spread to epidemic proportions by the gay community even after it was determined how it was spread.
Whether through vindictiveness or just not caring, thousands more died.

The Clinton initiative is great but a drop in the bucket. Where’s the rest of the world.

In one breath, the liberals say we aren’t doing enough for the New Orleans victims in the next were running a huge deficit.

If we weren’t fighting a war against the Islamic radicals they would take over Africa and murder most of these people (with or without AIDS) anyway. That’s what they are doing in the Sudan and other places, as we type.

The first reported cases of AIDS, in the US, although not called that at the time, were in Manhattan, NY.

As fenix stated they believe, although other reports say differently, that is was brought in my a black, gay flight attendant. Some other reports now dispute that.
In this PC age of not placing blame on anyone....who really knows. But I had always thought the way fenix did.

NO MATTER, in the US....the first community were there were multiple outbreads of AIDS was in Manhattan, NY and then in San Francisco, CA.

GAY men were the largest and initial spreaders of this desease in the US. Then it spread to others, drug users, women, from women to their children.

At this point 50% of the new cases being reported in 2005 were gay, black men.

^^^ is ONE time line given. There are many sites where they pretty much match this one. Others than say AIDS actually went back to 1950's...some say even earlier....but they called it something else at that time.

But, yes, I agree with fenix in that in the US gay men were the first groups this disease was a problem for.

Here is but one site that gives a HIV/AIDS timeline on the global problem/

There are many you can research yourself, like the CDC and from there they reference many more AIDs sites....like aids.com etc.

I see what you're saying Fenix. I think we were talking about 2 different things.

No matter where the disease came from, it's nobel of former President Clinton to care so much and devote his time to this.

Krafty - I think that what he is doing is fantastic. No matter how much our conservative friends here resent it, Clinton still has tremendous respect on the world stage and the fact that he has decided to spend that political capital by becoming involved in causes like this says much about his charachter. Why do you think conservatives jump so quickly to put some petty negative spin on it?

Of course the funniest thing was when when even Bush Jr recognized his influence and popularity and chose to team him up with his own father on a mission of good will.

I wonder sometimes how they reconcile their consistant asssertations that he is the scum of the earth with the fact that their hero went to him in a time of crisis and asked for his help.

Clinton's ALWAYS needed this type of public attention. HE can't live without it. HAS to be under the lime-light or he'd whither and die.

edited to add:

Heck we couldn't hardly get him to remember he was NO LONGER PRESIDENT long after President Bush was elected. He wouldn't go away. MSM reporting he needed to find something ELSE to do.

And he has a WIFE that is trying to keep her sentate seat....and is going to try to get the nomination for the WH in 2008. Gosh this will look great on her campaign rosters. Again, some here hope we'll have TWO Presidents in the WH at the same time again, like we already did.

PLUS, as I said before....he DID, and you can find his statement, saying, AFTER his affair with Monica was made public, [b]that he was going to do Good Christian work.

You know...the Christians KD's always asking what good they do. LOL

I personally thinks that his guilty conscience for the way he's lived his whole life.

But I love it when the liberal ladies club starts speaking for conservatives....AND saying things they NEVER SAID. Typical

It's obvious that SOME people resent the help given to these countries...is it because they're desperately poor or because they're black ?

Why can't some people just be happy that so many millions of children will be saved ?

It doesn't matter where or who started this horrible epidemic..... heterosexuals have contributed to the spread as well as homosexuals, men, women, old , young.

If the SARS epidemic had spread this much who would you blame...people who breathe ????

So what if Clinton is atoning for his "sins" ....isn't that a good thing ?

Let's see how many good things Jack Abramoff or Tom Delay do once they're cut loose.

""OR maybe he's getting a big salary for doing this too"""

He doesn't need a big salary AND

you didn't mind when Bush gave Clinton a huge tax break so don't complain about how he makes his money.

The POINT is , he is doing good and this just burns your butt.

YOU aren't!

And nobody has explained why the U.S would need this kind of money since we have such great health care ...c'mon...some one must be able to back that up

Burn MY butt??? ROFLOL ONLY in YOUR fantasy world. As usual, it's YOUR problem, YOUR issue, YOUR dreams.

So what if Clinton is atoning for his "sins" ....isn't that a good thing?

It's a great thing. Problem is he won't live long enough to make up for everything he's done wrong, imo. But, yes, it's GREAT that's he's actually following through on what he said he'd do.

One of my points is he's no better than any other past President who has worked for the benefit of others/humanitarian causes.

YOU discussed AIDS in America. OP was about Africa.

YOU brought up the question of some of this money being used for Americans? (gotcha on THAT one, didn't I)

YOU brought up Clinton's WIFE!!!!?????
Nothing to do with the topic.

You ARE nuts...and VERY selective in your own too.

YOU brought up the republicans...as did others before you, in this thread.

Matter of fact, liberals were telling us all, once again - just like YOU do all the time - what conservatives think....when nothing of the sort had been said.

Nope....just make up all that crap....it's your game.

And I would consider it a true 'blessing' if for once mingotree/crowfarm/linda blair ignored me. Or if all the other liberals ignored me. I'd LOVE it. I don't come here to get your approval. I come here to point out how off base you are most of the time.

Never did think that was going to make me 'popular' here. But that was NEVER my intention.

President Clinton is doing good work as is President Carter and President Bush Sr. when he joined with Clinton to help with the tsunami relief.

To try to imply that President Clinton is doing these deeds out of guilt is just plain silly. Do you even begin to realize the work involved in what he does?

He does this from his heart because he believes in what he is doing and that is to help others in need and the sincerity is there on his face plain as day whenever he speaks.

Fighting AIDS is one thing, but fighting the ignorance behind the disease is another. Some people still think it's a "gay" disease, just like some people think Iraq was responsible for 911. It amazes me that, in this day & age of communication, people are still in the dark about some very major issues.

It's only your own denial, KD, at work here.

It was the gay community that caused the spread of aid in our country.

It continues to be the gay community who is the LARGEST group continuing to spread aids right now.

FACTS ARE FACTS....liberal thinking doesn't often like that reality.

linda, YOU only ignore MY posts when they ask you questions you can't answer and I back you into a corner
See, like here...talking out of two sides of your mouth:
""Or if all the other liberals ignored me. I'd LOVE it. I don't come here to get your approval. I come here to point out how off base you are most of the time.""

Haha! First you say you'd love it if we ignored you....
THEN you say you only come in here to point something out to us

If we ignore you how can you point out the error of our ways ???

See, linda, your total lack of logic is mind boggling

Now, tell why you brought up Clinton's salary but are happy he got a huge tax break from bush.

All three Presidents that I named are US citizens. I'm certain the effect of their good works puts the US in higher standing worldwide and the ones that benefit from it do thank the US as a whole.

It's sad that you can't view the world as some of us do because you're missing out when you are only concerned for yourself and no one else seems to matter.

I will address and answer any statement/question I wish to address. Just as the liberals do here.

One equal playing field for all.

And you, nor anyother leftie controls what I say or when I say it.

NO CONTROL OVER ME. I know the lefties can't handle/control that....but again that's THEIR problem.
